    Mikhail Shumilin•ARTICLE•Philologus•2025

  • A Note on Pliny the Elder ( Hn 9.126)

    Open Access•Mikhail Shumilin•ARTICLE•The Classical Quarterly•2025

The article argues for an emendation in Plin. HN 9.126. Modern editors are accustomed to print the text cum testa uiuas , adopting J. Hardouin’s conjecture for cum terra uitis , the reading transmitted in most manuscripts. Nevertheless, the overlooked manuscript reading contritis conchis allows us to deduce a palaeographically neater solution contritis if conchis is considered a gloss which entered the text

  • Two Textual Notes on the Passio Anastasiae (BHL 410 + 1795 + 118 + 8093)

    Mikhail Shumilin•ARTICLE•Mnemosyne•2021

The Passio Anastasiae (BHL 410 + 1795 + 118 + 8093), now usually dated to the fifth century,1 is one of the rare late antique fictional passiones martyrum that can boast a critical edition based on a study of a significant part of its manuscript tradition (the one edited by Paola Francesca Moretti, based on 51 manuscripts out of about 200);2 indeed, it is the only such passio among those recently chosen by Michael Lapidge for translation.3 There …

  • Some Considerations on the Attribution of the ‘New Apuleius’

    Open Access•Dmitry Nikolaev, Mikhail Shumilin•ARTICLE•The Classical Quarterly•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 7

The ‘New Apuleius’ is a set of Latin summaries of Plato's works first published in 2016 by Justin Stover, who attributed it to Apuleius. The present article attempts to assess two key aspects of Stover's argument, viz. his reconstruction of the manuscript transmission of the new text and his use of computer-assisted stylometric techniques. The authors suggest that both strands of his argument are inconclusive. First, it is argued that the transpo…

Lines 27.14–17 of the text published by Justin Stover as Apuleius, De Platone 3 are printed by him as follows: quorum [ sc . animalium] inmortalia esse quae in caelo sint; idcirco illa ordine cieri et eodem semper modo et alioquin esse prudentia. Of them [ sc . animals], the immortal animals are those which are in the heavens; thus they move in an ordered pattern in the same way, and in addition, they are rational. (trans. J. Stover)
