Prolegomena to the Study of (the) Digital Being
This paper theorises what I call (the) digital Being by mobilising Jacques Derrida’s work on writing, mourning, and the spectre. Locating my inquiry in the material and the ideal, and/or the historical and the transcendental, I argue that (the) digital Being is in fact UnBeing, a novel theoretical concept which provides me with what James Bridle calls a ‘metaphor’, a ‘metalanguage’ or a new ‘shorthand ... that simultaneously acknowledges ... the …
Virginia Woolf’s Greek Tragedy
This monograph constitutes an incisive addition to the considerable and multi-faceted existing scholarship on Woolf’s relationship with Greece. Synthesizing (and expanding on) this scholarship, Worman’s particularly important contribution hinges on her express objective to examine Woolf’s work, mainly the novels, beyond the predominantly historicist, literary-historical framing, which characterizes much of existing scholarship in the field, to em…
Neither Sensible, Nor Moderate
In this essay, I try to conceptualise meaningful forms of resistance in the present by revisiting Sophocles’ Antigone, one of the most important texts of western literary tradition. I focus on Antigone’s compulsion to act against Creon’s decree, which turns Sophocles’ heroine into a metonymical expression of (civil) disobedience, sacrifice, and mourning—to my mind, the constitutive elements of effective resistant subjectivity. In my analysis, Ant…
Online misogyny and the alternative right
The aim of this critical intervention is twofold: first, to offer a few insights to the online misogyny debate based on a case-study involving myself and Milo Yiannopoulos, the prominent anti-feminist and self-styled ultra-conservative “bad boy;” second, to add a new, politically pronounced inflection to the meticulous work in the field, by arguing that although misogyny is not exclusively affiliated with a certain political register, its ferocio…
Hellenism and Loss in the Work of Virginia Woolf
Taking up Virginia Woolf's fascination with Greek literature and culture, this book explores her engagement with the nineteenth-century phenomenon of British Hellenism and her transformation of that multifaceted socio-cultural and political reality into a particular textual aesthetic, which Theodore Koulouris defines as 'Greekness.' Woolf was a lifelong student of Greek, but from 1907 to1909 she kept notes on her Greek readings in the Greek Noteb…
