  • Teaching the Elegiac Lover in Ovid’s Amores

    Phyllis A Katz, Phyllis Katz•ARTICLE•The Classical World•2009

This paper explores the evolution of views of Ovid’s elegiac lover. To counteract the tendency to define Ovid as a poet whose humor and irony were weaknesses, recent approaches have explored the complexities of Ovid’s lover, seeing him as both dominated by his puella and as her shrewd manipulator, a true desultor amoris . The paper summarizes five different approaches to the Amores (those of Paul Veyne, J. T. Davis, Barbara Weiden Boyd, Ellen Gre…

  • Writing as a tool for learning

    Open Access•Phyllis Katz, P S Katz et al.•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Education•1988

The faculty at Ward College of Technology CT, USA is expanding emphasis on writing as a method of improving student learning. The approach is three-pronged: first, to expand the writing portion of laboratory reports; second, to include free writing exercises in theory classes; and third, to introduce oral presentations into the laboratory. As a result of these efforts, students are becoming more organized and critical in their thinking and writin…

  • Retention of Women in Technology Programs

    Open Access•Phyllis Katz, Phyllis S Katz•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Education•1982

The consistent growth trend in the percentage of female students in schools of technology is apparent, but the actual number of females is still relatively small. To compound this problem, the attrition rate for this female minority is higher than that of males. Therefore, the challenge of the 1980's is to continue active recruitment of competent females and, once recruited, to retain them in academic programs. To do so, curricula must be creativ…
