  • Sex estimation of adult human skulls

    Open Access•I G Shirobokov, E N Uchaneva et al.•ARTICLE•Camera praehistorica•2026

Sex estimation based on cranial non-metric traits remains one of the most widely used methods in forensic and anthropological practice. Logistic regression equations based on five non-metric traits, first proposed by P. Walker (2008) and subsequently modified by many researchers for the use for populations of different origins, have gained considerable popularity. In the present study, we tested the effectiveness of several formalized methods bas…

  • Artificial cranial deformation

    Open Access•A V Gromov, Aleksey Kazarnitsky et al.•ARTICLE•Camera praehistorica•2025

There are various classifications of artificial cranial deformations. Among Russian anthropologists, the scheme of E.V. Zhirov (1940) is popular. As reference carriers of parietal deformation, he described samples from the Okunevo burials in Southern Siberia (Bronze Age), Zoroastrian and Nestorian medieval burials in Central Asia. However, later conclusions by E.V. Zhirov and other researchers concerning the deformation type in these series are c…

  • KozhukhovaE.I., MustafinKh.Kh., SemenovV.A., UchanevaE.N. Reconstructing Ethnocultural Processes in the Sausken Valley (Tuva) during the Later Half of the 1st Millennium BC

    Open Access•Мarina Kilunovskaya, I E Alborova et al.•ARTICLE•Уфимский археологический вестник•2024

The article represents findings of the group research devoted to reconstructing ethnocultural processes of the second half of the 1st millennium BC (Sausken Terrain Feature, Tuva). The research comprehensively studies local population groups who left behind their burial monuments in Eerbek River Valley. The study engages geneticist, ancient technologies experts, anthropologists and archaeologists. Kurgans of the middle and late Uyuk-Sagly Culture…

  • Variants of fixing a deformed area on 3D models of neurocranium

    Open Access•Alexey Kazarnitsky, A A Kazarnitsky et al.•ARTICLE•Camera praehistorica•2024

The morphology of skulls with occipito-parietal deformation is mainly influenced by two factors: the artificial deformation itself and the natural morphology of the skull. Basing on morphometric methods our study is focused on identifying possible interaction between these two factors. We suggested that reduction the analyzed area to the deformed region of the skull may provide a more precise understanding of the variation in occipitoparietal fla…

  • Cranial deformation in the northwestern Caspian Sea region in the Bronze Age

    Open Access•A A Kazarnitsky, A V Gromov et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 15

This research examined the occipitoparietal deformations of the Early Bronze Age skulls from the southern European part of Russia and the similarities between those deformations and head modifications among the population of the Okunev culture in Southern Siberia. The study objects used were 3D models of neurocrania from 41 individuals retrieved from Early Bronze Age graves in the northwestern Caspian Sea region and 64 individuals from the Okunev…

  • Analysis of 3D-Models of Artificially Deformed Crania, Using Geometric Morphometry

    Ekaterina V Pugacheva, E N Uchaneva et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2022

  • An elite burial of the Chinge-Tey I kurgan

    Open Access•E N Uchaneva•ARTICLE•Camera praehistorica•2022

The article presents preliminary results of the analysis of the skeletal remains of an individual buried in the elite grave 9 of the Chinge-Tey I kurgan. According to osteological data the skeleton belongs to a male of 20–25 years old. The hip and lower extremity bones display the periosteal lesions. Despite postmortem destruction and deformation, the skull was reconstructed and measured using rather wide battery of traits. The data on thirteen c…

  • Analysis of 3D-Models of Artificially Deformed Crania, Using Geometric Morphometry

    Open Access•Ekaterina V Pugacheva, E N Uchaneva et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2022•References: 12

The study of artificially deformed crania is complicated by difficulties in analyzing curvilinear shapes without reliable reference points for measurement. Methods of geometric morphometrics (GM) help to solve this problem. We generated 3D-models of deformed crania (26 male and 19 female) from burials of different chronological periods of the Okunev archaeological culture (Verkhniy Askiz I, Uybat III and V, Uybat-Charkov, Itkol I and II), Souther…

  • Some insights into the lives of builders of early Saint Petersburg

    Doris Gutsmiedl-Schümann, Claudia Gerling et al.•ARTICLE•Praehistorische Zeitschrift•2020

In 2014, the unexpected discovery of some mass graves shed light on the earliest days of the newly founded city of Saint Petersburg. The graves could be dated to the beginning of the 18 th century, and analyses of the 255 excavated skeletons indicate that the individuals buried there were some of the workers who were forced to the construction sites and contributed tobuilding early Saint Petersburg. In this article, we aim to examine the possible…
