  • Budget Numbers

Resham Nagpal Resham Nagpal, Resham Nagpal et al.•ARTICLE•Economic and political…•2026

The economic fallout of war in Iran on the Indian economy can derail fiscal consolidation, increase debt and reduce fiscal space for discretionary development spending. As we move to the fiscal year 2026-27, the most challenging aspect of macroeconomic management will be ensuring fiscal sustainability and the stability of inflation. Given the economic uncertainty the war has imposed, the 2026-27 budget numbers are at best indicative.

The deficit and expenditure numbers indicate that the primary focus of this year’s budget is fiscal consolidation. This is also a continuation of the past trend of consolidation that started in 2021–22

  • Sp issue on 16th Fin Commission-wl-5036-Enhanced Devolution and Fiscal Space at the State Level – Is it an Expansion or Contraction

Pinaki Chakraborty, Pinaki Chakraborty Pinaki Chakraborty et al.•ARTICLE•Economic and political…•2025

A significant increase in tax devolution by the Fourteenth Finance Commission (FC-XIV) was expected to provide greater fiscal autonomy to states. To accommodate this increase in tax devolution, the union government restructured the flow of grants to states. This paper examines the fiscal impact of these changes on aggregate resource transfers. It is observed that between 2010-11 and 2022-23 total transfers to states as percent of gross revenue re…

Pinaki Chakraborty, Pinaki Chakraborty Pinaki Chakraborty et al.•ARTICLE•Economic and political…•2025

The surge in global indebtedness, coupled with the suspension of fiscal rules in many countries following the pandemic, has resulted in a rethinking about the design of rule-based fiscal frameworks. As countries across the globe revisit their fiscal rules, union government in India too has made a major revision in the Union Budget 2025–26 in this regard. In its statement of fiscal policy 2025–26, the Government of India has replaced rigid annual …
