Dollar, Eurodollar, and the Myths of Petrodollar and De-dollarisation
Since the attack on Iran by Israel and the United States (US) that began on 28 February 2026, there has been intense debate regarding petrodollar and de-dollarisation. Our objective in this brief note—based on publicly available data—is to show that there has been no such thing as the petrodollar, and that although the US dollar’s dominance has been eroding for some time, the world has not yet reached a point of global de-dollarisation.

Since the attack on Iran by Israel and the United States (US) that began on 28 February 2026, there has been intense debate regarding petrodollar and de-dollarisation. Our objective in this brief note—based on publicly available data—is to show that there has been no such thing as the petrodollar, and that although the US dollar’s dominance has been eroding for some time, the world has not yet reached a point of global de-dollarisation.
