Modeling income distributions and Lorenz curves
Exchange-Rate Volatility and Foreign Trade: Evidence From Thirteen LDC's
This article investigates empirically the impact of real exchange-rate volatility on the export flows of 13 less developed countries (LDCs) over the quarterly period 1973-1996. Estimates of the cointegrating relations are obtained using Johansen's multivariate procedure. Estimates of the short-run dynamics are obtained for each country using the error-correction technique. The major results show that increases in the volatility of the real effect…
Income Inequality, Poverty, and Economic Welfare
Presented are new methods and new empirical studies on the subject of income inequality and poverty. The purpose of the book is to explore new ways to analyze recent trends in income inequality and poverty, both from the perspective of quantifying poverty and inequality and quantifyig the impact of various factors on the trends in inequality and poverty. The novelty lies in the diversity of empirical approaches used and customers will benefit fro…
Advances in Econometrics, Income Distribution and Scientific Methodology: Essays in Honor of Camilo Dagum
Articles on econometric methodology with special reference to the quantification of poverty and economic inequality are presented in this book. Poverty and inequality measurement present special problems to the econometrician, and most of these papers analyze how to attack those problems. The topics and contributions in the book are a very good representation of Camilo Dagum's astounding diversity of interests and overall eclecticism. Several of …
Measuring Trends in U.S. Income Inequality: Theory and Applications
Coordinate Space Versus Index Space Representations as Estimation Methods: An Application to How Macro Activity Affects the U.S. Income Distribution
This article examines the impact of macroeconomic variables on the level of income inequality in the United States. The innovation is that we introduce what is known as an index space representation to do so. In an index space representation, income shares are considered as a linear combination of what are known as index functions. An index function is a polynomial function whose order is specified by the given index. The macroeconomic variables …
The Trend Behavior of Alternative Income Inequality Measures in the United States From 1947–1990 and the Structural Break
This article tests the hypothesis that the time series process of income inequality has experienced a structural break. The timing of the structural break is treated as an unknown parameter to be estimated from the data because it is not possible to associate a single episodic policy event with the break year and to avoid bias in favor of a unit-root hypothesis if the break was near the selected year. For several measures of income inequality a s…

Poverty and Change in the Macroeconomy: A Dynamic Macroeconometric Model
This paper analyzes the impact of macroeconomic activity on the level of poverty in the U.S. economy. The authors us e a macroeconometric model of poverty in the United States where the rat e of poverty is presumed to depend upon changes in various indicators of macroeconomic performance and policy. The authors empirically model the relationship between poverty and the macroeconomy with a hybrid mode l that employs a reduced-form model to capture…
Measuring the Quality of Life Across Countries
A Theoretical Analysis of the Beneficial Effects of the Brain-Drain Phenomenon
The primary objective of this paper is to examine the impact of migration, and ultimately remittances on economic development in an LDC [less-developed country] within the context of a two-sector development model. For this purpose we construct a two-period development model wherein the country loses professional workers in the first period, but receives foreign-exchange remittances in the second period. Then we derive the conditions under which …

An analysis of the relationship between various redistributive programs and poverty
The political market for real income redistribution through choice of the weights in Colas
The paradox of politics and policy in redistributing income
A Note on Measuring Veblen's Theory of Conspicuous Consumption
Measuring Preference Variation across North America
This paper utilizes the generalized Fechner-Thurstone direct utility function to see if relative price changes in neighboring countries affect the preference structure of the host country. The authors analyze the case of Canada, Mexico, and the United States. They utilize the generalized Fechner-Thurstone functional form because it allows them to detect changes in preferences when parameters, such as prices, change. They find evidence of Veblen e…
Relative Price Changes and Inequality in the Size Distribution of Various Components of Income: A Multidimensional Approach
This article uses a comprehensive model of economic inequality to examine the impact of relative price changes on inequality in the marginal distributions of various income components in which the marginal distributions are derived from a multidimensional joint distribution. The multidimensional joint distribution function is assumed to be a member of the Pearson Type VI family; that is, it is assumed to be a beta distribution of the second kind.…
The Sensitivity of the True Cost of Living to Price-Induced and Income-Induced Changes in Aggregate Consumers' Tastes
This article examines the sensitivity of the cost of living to some aspects of price changes and income changes that cannot be detected by Laspeyres indexes like the CPI-U or CPI-W. Effects of price-induced and income-induced changes in consumers tastes on the cost of living in the United States from 1947 to 1981 are estimated and found to be generally substantial
