Agricultural innovation for climate change
The extent to which new technologies can countervail the risks posed by climate change is a critical element for designing adaptation strategies. This study uses new experimental data spanning 17 US states from 2008 to 2023 to examine the potential impact of recently commercialized drought tolerant (DT) traits on both yield and yield resilience in US corn production. We find that there is no yield advantage for DT hybrids under average weather co…
Genetically engineered varieties and applied pesticide toxicity in U.S. maize and soybeans
Patent Failure
Patent Failure: How Judges, Bureaucrats, and Lawyers Put Innovators at Risk . Princeton, NJ : Princeton University Press . 331 pages. ISBN 9780691134918 , $29.95 cloth . James Bessen and Michael J. Meurer . 2008 . This book's title leaves no doubt as to its main thesis—the patent system is not living up to its putative role, and rather than serving as a powerful provider of incentives for innovation, it has become a source of costs that, in most …
Incomplete Adoption of a Superior Innovation
We consider a model in which an innovating monopolist of a technologically superior intermediate input must sell this product to final output producers. Prior research shows that, with complete information, the monopolist’s optimal strategy will lead to complete adoption of this technologically superior innovation. In this article we show that, when the price of some competitively supplied input used in the final product market is endogenous and …
Imposing Local Curvature Conditions in Flexible Demand Systems
By reparameterizing the basic translog and the log translog demand systems and exploiting the fact that the Slutsky matrix must be negative semidefinite but cannot be negative definite, it is shown that a recently proposed simple procedure to maintain locally the curvature property of consumer theory can be applied to these popular translog models as well. The proposed procedure can also be applied to other demand-system specifications such as, f…
A Non-Nested Test of Separability for Flexible Functional Forms
This paper develops a separable functional form in which all the relevant aggregator functions are modeled.to the desired degree of approximation. This leads to separable structures that are more flexible than those implied by parametric restrictions of flexible functional forms. Tests of separability can then be accomplished in a nonnested framework. This approach is illustrated with an application to input-output separability for a multiproduct…
Testing for Preference Change in Consumer Demand
This article considers the hypothesis that preference changes may partly explain observed consumption patterns. A model is developed based on indirect weak separability. The kernel estimator of the regression function models the unknown shape of demand functions, and a parametric structure models seasonality, dynamics, and preference change. This semiparametric specification is applied to U.S. meat demand. The results support the notion that chan…
