  • The significance of donkey droppings

    Open Access•Jelle Wiering, Jelle Oscar Wiering•ARTICLE•Culture and Organization•2026•References: 21

This article examines how meaningful experiences of work are shaped through materiality by bringing meaningful work and dirty work scholarship into dialogue. Focusing on meaningful experiences, it introduces the concept of events of significance: occurrences in which the meaningfulness of work is negotiated as it unfolds. Analyzing two such events at a Dutch donkey sanctuary, the article shows that materiality is integral to how meaningfulness is…

  • The Curious Case of the Condom

    Open Access•Jelle Wiering•ARTICLE•Material Religion•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 15

This article argues that the material approach to religion can productively be extended to the domain of the secular, so as to grasp its material dimension. It investigates the Dutch field of sexual health to examine the ways in which the male condom was employed to underscore an image of religion as an obstacle to open conversations about sexual matters. It analyzes how the condom was deployed during sex education classes to evoke discussions ab…

This article focuses on the triangulation of sexuality, religion and secularity in Dutch society by analysing two contemporary case studies. We focus on sexual experiences and practices rather than sexual identities to further understand the constructions of what constitutes ‘good’ sex. The empirical research is situated in the Netherlands, where the binary of religion and sexual regulation versus secularity and sexual freedom has been dominant i…

  • There is a Sexular Body

    Open Access•Jelle Wiering•ARTICLE•Secularism and Nonreligion•2017•Cited by: 4•References: 39

This article calls for more `bottom-up inquiry' into the secular, departing from the assumption that it features normative ideologies and practices that dominate current societies. I plea for collecting and analyzing manifestations of the secular, as the secular as an phenomenon in society is surprisingly unexplored. To stimulate such inquiry, I suggest a material approach to the secular, as it will provide researchers with tools to conduct empir…

  • Others Think I am Airy-fairy”

    Open Access•Jelle Wiering•ARTICLE•Contemporary Buddhism•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 10

This article draws attention to Navayana (Western) Buddhists practicing their religiosity while facing a strongly secularized context. Based on data gathered from fieldwork, this article reveals an interesting paradox concerning the importance of material forms in Navayana Buddhism in the Netherlands. While the body and objects were observed to be crucial for the meditation ritual in Navayana Buddhism, their function was strongly downplayed by mo…
