  • Understanding weather futures based on the past

Open Access•Nicole Macdonald, Simon Naylor et al.•ARTICLE•Scottish Geographical Journal•2023

We present a weather history for Stornoway in the Outer Hebrides, an island chain off the northwest coast of Scotland. It combines a new 164-year composite rainfall record representative of the settlement of Stornoway (1857–2019), alongside descriptive accounts of weather harvested from the school logbooks from the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway (1873–1974). The school logbooks record the experiences of the school, school children and wider comm…

  • Success to the Shropshire Chamber of Agriculture’

    Open Access•James P Bowen•ARTICLE•Rural History•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 5

The central and associated county or district chambers of agriculture have attracted little attention from historians. Their origins have been attributed to the perceived lack of a national coordinating body for agriculture highlighted by the 1865–7 cattle plague. This article based on the records of the Shropshire Chamber of Agriculture, newspapers and printed histories reconsiders their role. Members were initially drawn from landowning society…

  • The dreadful catastrophe that happened at Asterton ’

    James P Bowen•ARTICLE•Landscape History•2022

This paper reconstructs the course of an event that happened at Asterton in south Shropshire in the late eighteenth century which at the time was attributed to a hurricane. Having reviewed the surviving evidence, in particular a contemporary account written by Reverend Edward Rogers as well as the coroner’s inquisition report, newspaper articles, historic meteorological data, and the physical landscape, it will be argued that it was in all probab…

  • Extreme weather, school logbooks and social vulnerability

Open Access•Simon Naylor, Nicole Macdonald et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Historical Geography•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 3

This paper demonstrates the value of school logbooks, an unusual and hitherto underused archival source, to the field of the historical geographies of weather and climate. It examines logbooks for schools across the Outer Hebrides, or Western Isles, off the west coast of mainland Scotland, ranging from the late nineteenth century until the early twentieth century. The weather had numerous and varied impacts on everyday life on the islands and was…

  • A dreadful phenomenon described and improved’

Open Access•James P Bowen, Nicole Macdonald et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Historical Geography•2019•Cited by: 1

Earthquakes are of interest to geologists and physical geographers, yet rarely attract historical geographers’ attention. This paper uses contrasting representations of the Buildwas, Shropshire, ‘earthquake’ of 1773 to reconstruct the course of the event and its immediate aftermath. The contemporary mapping of the scene records the changes in the physical landscape, with the hillside slippage blocking the River Severn, a vital inland navigation r…

  • Before the breaking of the day, in a riotous manner and with great shouts and outcries’

    Open Access•James P Bowen•ARTICLE•Rural History•2015•References: 18

Enclosure disputes have long attracted attention given their perceived political motivations, the importance of custom and customary practices in legitimising action and various forms of protest. Based on research undertaken at local and national record offices and the study of both written records and maps, this paper explores a series of disputes over common land in the wood-pasture countryside of Shropshire, placing them within the wider histo…
