Retrieval practice benefits for spelling performance in fifth-grade children
Retrieval practice typically benefits learning in children, although little is known about the benefits of retrieval practice for learning spelling. We investigated this issue in three experiments with fifth-grade children from a low-income area of Brazil. In the experiments, children first read a list of words (study), and after a short interval wrote down the studied words after hearing and rereading them (copy) or after only hearing them (retr…
Affective priming caused by musical chords on human facial expressions
The emotional valence of a given stimulus is more quickly identified when such stimulus is preceded by another stimulus with a congruent valence (e.g., a positive word preceded by another positive word), a phenomenon termed affective priming. The present study investigated whether affective priming occurs when chords (consonant/dissonant, high/low pitch) are used as primes, and faces (happy or sad) are used as targets. Forty undergraduate student…
Priming Emocional: Efeitos De Acordes Consonantes E Dissonantes Sobre O Julgamento De Palavras Emocionais
Individual Perception, Bargaining Behavior, and Negotiation Outcomes: A Comparison across Two Countries
This study explores a model of the relationships between negotiators' perceptions of the negotiation situation, their behavior, and negotiation outcomes, using data collected in Canada and China. The results show that while Chinese negotiators are more concerned with maintaining good relations in the negotiation process, Canadian negotiators put more weight on their individual economic gains from negotiation. This result suggests a difference in …
Detrending, stylized facts and the business cycle
The stylized facts of macroeconomic time series can be presented by fitting structural time series models. Within this framework, we analyse the consequences of the widely used detrending technique popularised by Hodrick and Prescott (1980). It is shown that mechanical detrending based on the Hodrick–Prescott filter can lead investigators to report spurious cyclical behaviour, and this point is illustrated with empirical examples. Structural time…
