Oludamini Ogunnaike, Niki Kasumi Clements et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Words Made Flesh•2025

The first sustained treatment of religion and religions in the scholarship of a prominent Caribbean thinker Sylvia Wynter is a profoundly transdisciplinary scholar whose works span an impressive array of theory, literature, science, anthropology, philosophy, and religious studies as well as different forms, including essays, plays, a novel, and a 935-page unpublished manuscript entitled “Black Metamorphosis: New Natives in a New World.” Whatever…

  • Associations of hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibody positivity with opioid, stimulant, and polysubstance injection among people who inject drugs (PWID) in rural U.S. communities

    Open Access•A T Estadt, William C Miller et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2025

HCV antibody positivity, indicating prior exposure, was highest among those who had recently injected opioids, alone or with stimulants. Additional nucleic acid testing is necessary to confirm active infection. More research is needed to determine the underlying causes of HCV antibody positivity by injection use

    Open Access•Scott D Rhode, Amanda E Tanner et al.•ARTICLE•Progress in community health…•2024

Background: Gay, bisexual, queer, and other men who have sex with men (GBQMSM) and transgender persons in Appalachia are at an increased risk for HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), hepatitis C virus (HCV), mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) and are less likely to use prevention and care services. Objectives: Our community-based participatory research partnership sought to develop an intervention to increase use of HIV, STI, HCV, and mpo…

  • State-Level History of Overdose Deaths Involving Stimulants in the United States, 1999‒2020

David Kline, Amanda M Bunting et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2023•References: 17

Objectives. To examine the state-level history of US overdose deaths involving stimulants with and without opioids from 1999 to 2020. Methods. We used death certificate data from the National Center for Health Statistics to categorize deaths into 4 groups of interest: cocaine with and without opioids, and psychostimulants with and without opioids. We used a Bayesian multiple change point model to describe the timing and magnitude of changes in ov…

  • Examining the Drivers of Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Non-Adherence to Antihypertensive Medications and Mortality Due to Heart Disease and Stroke

Open Access•Macarius Donneyong, Michael A Fischer et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Background: Prior research has identified disparities in anti-hypertensive medication (AHM) non-adherence between Black/African Americans (BAAs) and non-Hispanic Whites (nHWs) but the role of determinants of health in these gaps is unclear. Non-adherence to AHM may be associated with increased mortality (due to heart disease and stroke) and the extent to which such associations are modified by contextual determinants of health may inform future i…

  • Observing whiteness

    David Kline•ARTICLE•Social Identities•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 10

This essay engages cultural theorist Sylvia Wynter’s theory of ‘genres of being human’ and sociologist Niklas Luhmann’s theory of social system observation in order to argue that the system of whiteness is a religiously produced, self-referential, and self-reproducing social (sub-) system of what Wynter calls the broader genre of ‘Man,’ the Christian west’s overrepresented and overdetermined model of a singularly proper human subject. Whiteness i…

  • Racism and the Weakness of Christian Identity

David Kline•BOOK•Racism and the Weakness of…•2020

Despite the command from Christ to love your neighbour, Western Christianity has continued to be afflicted by the evil of racism and the acts of violence that accompany it. Through a systems theoretical and deconstructive account of religion and the political theology of St. Paul, this book traces how the racism and violence of modern Western Christianity is a symptom of its failure to secure its own myth of sovereignty within a complex world of …

  • The Pragmatics of Resistance

    David Kline•ARTICLE•Critical Philosophy of Race•2017

This article argues that Frank B. Wilderson's political ontology can be read as both a critique and a radicalization of Giorgio Agamben's formal political-ontological framework constructed around the two extreme poles of sovereignty and bare life. Wilderson critiques and expands Agamben's framework by locating the zero point of political abjection not within bare life, which is still implicated within the ontological zone of Human being by way of…

  • The Conceding of Afghanistan

    David Kline•ARTICLE•The Washington Quarterly•1983

Rarely has a U.S. administration acted in such stark contradiction with a stated policy as in the U.S. response to the Afghan crisis, which, after the initial uproar, has faded into obscurity
