The (evolving) role of agriculture in poverty reduction—An empirical perspective
The Role Of Agriculture In Poverty Reduction An Empirical Perspective
The relative contribution of a sector to poverty reduction is shown to depend on its direct and indirect growth effects as well as its participation effect. The paper assesses how these effects compare between agriculture and non-agriculture by reviewing the literature and by analyzing cross-country national accounts and poverty data from household surveys. Special attention is given to Sub-Saharan Africa. While the direct growth effect of agricu…
Growth, Distribution and Poverty in Africa
This book synthesizes, and elaborates on the results of a series of country studies, completed under the Poverty Dynamics in Africa Initiative, organized by the Africa Region of the Bank. These studies made use of vastly improved household survey data, which have enhanced understanding of African poverty dynamics during the past decade. The book examines the main factors behind observed poverty changes in eight countries - Ethiopia, Ghana, Madaga…
Growth, Distribution, and Poverty in Africa
Christiaensen, Demery, and Paternostro review recent evidence on the trends in \n household well-being in Africa during the 1990s. They draw \n on the findings of a series of studies on poverty dynamics \n that use the better data sets now available. The authors \n begin by taking a broad view of poverty, tracing changes in \n both income poverty and in other more direct measures of \n individual welfare. Are Poverty and Social Goals for the 21st Century Attainable
Summaries The article assesses the prospects for countries attaining two important International Development Goals (IDGs) by the year 2015: halving the proportion of people living in extreme poverty; and reducing by two thirds the death rate for children. On the basis of recent growth experience and predicted GDP growth rates, the picture is mixed. About a half of the developing countries for which data are available are likely to reach the pover…

Cross-Section Evidence for Balanced and Unbalanced Growth
PpTHE terms balanced and unbalanced appear in many and varied contexts within economic theory. One writer has even suggested that it is a cause of much confusion that 'balance' in economic could mean almost anything (Ohlin, 1959, p. 338). This lack of definition has also characterized attempts at statistical verification of the theories. Balanced in the Nurkse (1953) sense arose in the context of development economics and sought to provide some p…
Statistical Evidence of Balanced and Unbalanced Growth
where G is the growth rate of aggregate demand, and gi and Ei are the actual growth rate and the income elasticity of output for the ith sector respectively. GEi is defined as the expected growth rate of the ilh sector.2 Measure (2) is preferred to (1) as the latter is unnecessarily sensitive to extreme deviations in sectoral growth rates. Swamy then correlated both measures of imbalance with the aggregate growth rate, G. Coefficients were positi…
