Epistemic injustice in healthcare
Women's health concerns are frequently dismissed in clinical settings, a pattern described as medical gaslighting. Drawing on Fricker's (2007) framework of epistemic injustice and Carel and Kidd's (2014) extension to healthcare, this study conceptualises patient voice, encompassing feelings of involvement, empowerment, and being heard, as a measurable correlate of epistemic injustice in the clinical encounter. We distinguish two forms: testimonia…
Labour market implications of thyroid dysfunctions
This paper aims to shed some light on the labour market implications of thyroid disease. Undetected hypothyroidism has adverse effects on wages for female workers, thus widening the existing gender wage gap. However, once female individuals are diagnosed (and therefore assumed to be treated) with hypothyroidism, they experience wage gains and have a higher employment probability. In relation to other labour market outcomes, thyroid disease does no…
Economic insecurity
Economic insecurity is an emerging topic that is increasingly relevant to the labour markets of developed economies. This paper uses data from the British Household Panel Survey to assess the causal effect of various aspects of economic insecurity on mental health in the UK. The results support the idea that economic insecurity is an emerging socioeconomic determinant of mental health, although the size of the effect varies across measures of ins…
Employment Protection, Flexibility and Firms' Strategic Location Decisions under Uncertainty
We construct a model in which oligopolistic firms decide between locating in a country where employment protection implies costly output adjustments and in one without employment protection. Using a two‐period three‐stage game with uncertainty, we demonstrate that location is influenced by both flexibility and strategic concerns. The strategic effects under Cournot work towards domestic anchorage in the country with employment protection, while t…
The Decline of the Welfare State
Efficiency Gaps, Love of Variety and International Trade
We develop a general equilibrium monopolistic competition model of trade with technical heterogeneity among firms and countries. With free entry, technical asymmetries between firms result in the endogenous determination of the equilibrium average efficiency of the industry. We show that trade reduces (increases) the minimum efficiency required to survive in the more (less) efficient country. This has important welfare implications: (1) Contrary …
Unionisation and Foreign Direct Investment
This paper investigates the effects of different degrees of wage setting centralisation on the \nincentive of a MNE to locate in a host country, and on the host country's welfare. Decentralised \nand centralised wage bargaining are considered. The nature of product market competition \nbetween the MNE and domestic ®rms proves crucial to results which cast doubt on some of the \nconventional wisdom on FDI. In particular, we show that: (i) it is no…
