Factors affecting distribution of emerald ash borer parasitoids in an urban environment
The Social Efficiency of Private Decisions to Enforce Property Rights
Costs must be incurred if an owner is to enforce private property rights effectively. The authors show that, in a perfectly competitive economy, private decisions to enforce rights may result in either more or less enforcement than is socially efficient. Cases of multiple stable equilibria occur and an equilibrium may be locally, but not globally, efficient. Resources may not be employed in their socially most valuable uses and enforcement may be…
Free Access versus Private Property in a Resource
Distributions of income are compared under the alternative regimes of free access to, and private property in, a resource. It is shown that, in several analytically distinct cases, all those deprived of free access on conversion of a resource to private property can be better off, even though no compensating transfers are made. This resu lt can hold even if the granting of private property rights also conf ers monopoly or monopsony power. Copyrig…
On the Interpretation of Inferior Goods and Factors
The jargon of economics defines the concept of inferiority in terms of market behaviour: purchases of an good (factor) are inversely related to income (output). The literature contains few instances of systematic interest in the attributes of commodities that display such market behaviour,1 most writers being content with the interpretations of inferiority in Hicks' Value and Capital. These interpretations are the points of departure for the foll…
Vertical Control of Markets
Price Discrimination and Vertical Control
The analysis extends beyond the standard case of the monopolist who integrates in order to isolate some of his customers from arbitrage in the monopolized good so that he can discriminate against them. It examines the exploitation of factors employed by, and the customers of, the monopolist's customers. By vertical integration the monopolist may utilize barriers to arbitrage that would otherwise be unexploited because the market is competitive. S…

A Reply to Newbery on Free-Access Resources
To reply to this criticism I must briefly summarize the objectives of my paper, more fully set out in the introduction to it. Knight's famous paper (1924) on social costs contains what can be regarded as a classical analysis of a freeaccess resource, but his model has two limitations: it is formulated in terms of an industry production function; and it is limited to a single variable factor. My main objectives were (a) to supply a theory of the f…
Mohring and Boyd's Objection to the Coase Theorem
H. Mohring and J. M. Boyd (1971) illustrate their criticism of R. H. Coase's (1960) theorem on social cost by reference to the case of Sturges v. Bridgman, in which the court granted a Wimpole Street physician an injunction to restrain a neighbouring confectioner from using noisy machinery. According to the Coase theorem, given costless and unimpeded negotiations between the parties and abstracting from income effects, the equilibrium production …

Resale Price Maintenance and Retail Outlets
Resale price maintenance (r.p.m.), the marketing practice by which the producer or brander of products requires subsequent resellers to offer them at minimum or stipulated prices, has been a subject of discussion and analysis for over a quarter century. There does not, however, seem to exist in the literature any formal analysis of the optimal choice of price and margin by a manufacturer (brander) practising r.p.m. The purpose of this article is …
