    David Newbery, David M Newbery•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•1995•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 2

In Soviet-type economies, commodity prices were distorted as part of the redistributive system of the state, but with the transition, prices have been liberalised and taxes made more uniform. Has this change adversely affected the distribution of purchasing power? The paper develops a new method of measuring the distributional impact of price changes by computing the distributional characteristics of commodities from household budget survey data,…

  • Competition in the British Electricity Spot Market

Richard Green, Richard J Green et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•1992•Citada por: 30

Most of the British electricity supply industry has been privatized. Two dominant generators supply bulk electricity to an unregulated "pool." They submit a supply schedule of prices for generation and receive the market-clearing price, which varies with demand. Despite claims that this should be highly competitive, the authors show that the Nash equilibrium in supply schedules implies a high markup on marginal cost and substantial deadweight los…

  • Cost Recovery from Optimally Designed Roads

    David M Newbery, Dmg Newbery•ARTICLE•Economica•1989•Citada por: 2

If vehicles are charged for the road damage they cause, only a fraction of maintenance costs will be recovered. This paper proves that with constant returns to scale in construction and use, the balance, together with interest on the capital cost, will be recovered by congestion charges. Congestion costs are calculated for Britain, and shown to slightly exceed the total recurrent highway costs and interest on the capital value. Copyright 1989 by …
