How much time is recorded with a rib bone isotope
A 4.3-million-year-old Australopithecus anamensis mandible from Ileret, East Turkana, Kenya, and its paleoenvironmental context
Effects of maceration on light stable isotopic (δ13C, δ18O) values of pig (Sus scrofa) rib bone carbonate
Geoprofiling isotopic analyses provide investigative leads for unidentified human remains cases by determining possible regions of origin or excluding unlikely residences during life, which in turn can reduce the number of missing persons an investigator mustconsider. However, maceration methods involving heat, bleach, baking soda, and detergents have much potential to significantly change biogenic isotopic values in the structural carbonate phas…
C4 plant food loss probably influenced Paranthropus boisei's extinction
Little Ice Age to modern lake-level fluctuations from Ferguson's Gulf, Lake Turkana, Kenya, based on sedimentology and ostracod assemblages
Lacustrine sedimentary records and the proxies contained within them are valuable archives of past climate. However, the resolution of these records is frequently coarse or contains a high degree of uncertainty, making it difficult to resolve how climatic variability impacts the ecosystems on which humans depend. The goal of this study is to couple recent sediment cores sampled at centimeter-scale resolution with paleo- and historical information…
Food Has No Borders
Isotopic analyses of human remains augment the biological profile with geolocation and dietary information, furthering efforts to identify unknown individuals from a forensic context. Here we test the methodological resolution of geolocation (δ18O, 87Sr/86Sr) and dietary (δ13C, δ15N) isotopes of one identified individual who immigrated to New York City from St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), Lesser Antilles. Isotope-based geolocation estimates…
From the Piedmont to the Coast
Mounting evidence suggests that the Archaic Southeast shell mound builders had large‐scale trade networks and engaged in social aggregations. Here, incremental 87 Sr/ 86 Sr values were measured by laser ablation‐inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry (LA‐ICP‐MS) in third molar enamel samples of 11 individuals interred in the Middle Archaic Harris Creek shell burial mound in St. John's River Valley (SJRV), Florida. Results reveal that SJRV r…
Revisiting the pedogenic carbonate isotopes and paleoenvironmental interpretation of Kanapoi
Biogeochemical evidence for residence, diet, and health of the Woman in the Iron Coffin (Queens, New York City)
In 2011, the mummified body of a Black adult female was discovered in a mid‐19th‐century Fisk iron coffin buried in Queens, New York City. Archival research points to the identity of the woman as Martha Peterson, a domestic worker who lived in the home of William Raymond, the business partner and neighbour of Almond Fisk, the coffin inventor and manufacturer. Here, we apply biogeochemical methods to provide information about the Woman in the Iron…
Isotopic equifinality and rethinking the diet of Australopithecus anamensis
My integrative diet model reconciles the carbon isotopic data with the dentognathic and microwear evidence of A. anamensis' diet and suggests that "savanna" chimps are not proper dietary analogs of A. anamensis. A foraging strategy across heterogeneous habitats of the Pliocene Omo-Turkana Basin incorporating an array of 13 C-depleted and 13 C-enriched C 3 foods and a portion of C 4 resources may have served as one of the selective pressures for A…
Influence of Plio-Pleistocene basin hydrology on the Turkana hominin enamel carbonate δ 18 O values
Kana Tamata or Feasts of Men
By integrating osteological, taphonomic, archaeological and stable isotopic data, we test for cannibalism in the Lau Group, Fiji and discuss the potential underlying cause(s) and context(s) of this behaviour. First, we compare taphonomic and element representations of human skeletal material from two contexts in Fiji, examining human bone fragments from archaeological sites, including middens and burials in the Lau Island Group. Fourteen sites pr…
Pedogenic carbonate stable isotopic evidence for wooded habitat preference of early Pleistocene tool makers in the Turkana Basin
Prehistoric Fijian diet and subsistence
Stratigraphy, correlation, and age estimates for fossils from Area 123, Koobi Fora
Diet and mobility in Middle Archaic Florida
Paleogeographic variations of pedogenic carbonate δ13C values from Koobi Fora, Kenya
Plio-Pleistocene facies environments from the KBS Member, Koobi Fora Formation
Spatial variation of strontium isotopes (87Sr/86Sr) in the Maya region
Spatial variation of strontium isotopes (87Sr/86Sr) in the Maya region
