Tertiary Education and Economic Growth
CHATTERJI M. (1998) Tertiary education and economic growth, Reg. Studies 32 , 349-354. The paper investigates the potential importance of tertiary education in the growth process using the standard data in the field. Previous studies have focused largely on primary and secondary education and have calculated growth rates using only two data points. In this paper these potential anomalies are addressed. All available data are used in calculating g…
Unions and Efficient Training
The paper examines the optimal level of training investment when trained workers are mobile, wage contracts are time‐consistent, and training comprises both specific and general skills. The firm has ex post monopsonistic power that drives trained workers' wages below the social optimum. The emergence of a trade union bargaining at the firm‐level can increase social welfare, by counterbalancing the firm's ex post monopsonistic power in wage determ…
Convergence Clubs and Relative Economic Performance in Great Britain
CHATTERJI M. and DEWHURST J. H. LL. (1996) Convergence clubs and relative economic performance in Great Britain: 1977–1991, Reg. Studies 30, 31–40. Movements in the gross domestic product (GDP) per capita of English and Welsh counties and Scottish regions are examined to test whether the counties and regions are converging in terms of GDP per capita. The exercise is carried out for the period 1977 to 1991 and for six sub-periods. Although there i…
Union Membership and Wage Bargaining when Membership is not Compulsory
This paper provides a formal model of union wage and membership determination where the union is recognized for bargaining purposes, where membership of the union is not compulsory, and where the union faces a budget constraint in its organization activities. This simultaneous equation model is then used as the basis for estimation of manual wages and union density for the private sector using the 1990 Workplace Industrial Relations Survey. Copyr…

Earnings, Overtime and Regional Labour Markets
BLACK A., CHAPMAN P. G. And CHATTERJI M. (1993) Earnings, overtime and regional labour markets, Reg. Studies 27, 637–650. This paper examines the growth of earnings in all regions of Great Britain from 1974 to 1991. The central hypotheses of the paper are that disaggregation of weekly earnings into its constituents is helpful in understanding regional labour markets and that the standard regions do not correspond to distinct regional labour marke…

Redundancy Payments and Firm-Specific Training
This paper attempts to provide an economic rationale for the existence and pattern of redundancy payments. A model of firm-specific training with uncertain returns to training and uncertainty about the outside options of workers is constructed for this purpose. The central result is that an optimal contract will involve the firm in bearing only a part of the training costs because workers may quit. Since workers bear part of the cost of training,…

Political Shocks and Investment
There has been some dispute about the impact of New Deal policies on the business climate. Some historians have argued that the New Deal frightened business, and others that it encouraged business. This paper analyzes the impact of the New Deal on business investment by looking at the response of investment to the outcome of the 1934, 1936, and 1938 elections, as well as the passage of certain New Deal legislation. The data reject the hypothesis …
