What is driving wealth inequality in the United States of America: The Role of Productivity, Taxation and Skills
Out of four major structural changes affecting the US economy – namely a rising share of skilled workers, skill-biased technological change, decreasing progressiveness of taxation and productivity slowdown – we show that the decline in productivity growth not only is the main driver of the widening wealth disparities observed in the United States of America over the past few decades, but is also the only mechanism that can explain inequalities bo…

Understanding Cross-country Differences in Health Status and Expenditures
Using a general equilibrium heterogeneous agent model featuring health production, we quantify the contribution of health price in explaining cross-country differences in health expenditures and health status. Considering other country-specific explanatory factors, U.S. health prices are estimated to be 33% higher than those of European countries. This price differential explains more than 60% of the difference in health expenditures and more tha…

Welfare Cost of Fluctuations When Labor Market Search Interacts with Financial Frictions
We study the welfare costs of business cycles in a search and matching model with financial frictions. The model replicates the volatility on labor and financial markets. Business cycle costs are sizable. Indeed, the interactions between labor market and financial frictions magnify the impact of shocks via (i) a credit multiplier effect and (ii) an endogenous wage rigidity inherent to financial frictions. In addition, in a nonlinear framework, la…

Life-Cycle Equilibrium Unemployment
This paper extends the job creation–job destruction approach to the labor market to take into account a deterministic finite horizon. As hirings and separations depend on the time over which investment costs can be recouped, the life-cycle setting implies age-differentiated labor-market flows. While search by the unemployed falls with age, the separation rate is rather U-shaped over the life cycle. Worker heterogeneity in the context of undirecte…
Does the growth process discriminate against older workers
Markups and the Welfare Cost of Business Cycles: A Reappraisal
Gali, Gertler, and Lopez‐Salido (2007) recently show quantitatively that fluctuations in the efficiency of resource allocation do not generate sizable welfare costs. In their economy, which is distorted by monopolistic competition in the steady state, we show that they underestimate the welfare cost of these fluctuations by ignoring the negative effect of aggregate volatility on average consumption and leisure. As monopolistic suppliers, both fir…
Optimal unemployment insurance for older workers
Labour Market Institutions and Technological Employment
Our paper seeks to gain insights into the effect of labour market institutions on the dynamics of the labour market during the diffusion process of new technologies. We develop an endogenous job destruction matching framework, with heterogeneous workers, where the segmentation of the labour market between workers having the required ability to do a technological job and the rest of the workers is endogenous. The dynamics of this segmentation may …

Distance to Retirement and Older Workers‘ Employment: The Case for Delaying the Retirement Age
This paper presents empirical evidence and a theoretical foundation in favor of the view that the retirement age decision affects older workers ’ em-ployment prior to retirement. To the extent that there are search frictions on the labor market, the return on jobs is determined by their expected dur-ation: the time to retirement is then key to understanding older workers’ employment. Countries with a retirement age of 60 are indeed characterized …

Quantifying the Laffer Curve on the Continued Activity Tax in a Dynastic Framework
It is argued that the tax on continued activity should be removed by implementing actuarially fair schemes. However, these schemes cannot fund the expected Social Security (SS) deficit. This article proposes to give individuals a fraction of the actuarially fair incentives in the case of postponed retirement. SS faces a trade‐off between giving enough incentives to make individuals delay retirement and giving little increase in pensions in order …
