  • Relationship Stickiness, International Trade, and Economic Uncertainty

Julien Martin, Isabelle Méjean et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2026

We study how stickiness in business relationships influences the trade impact of aggregate uncertainty. To begin, we construct a product-level index of relationship stickiness using firm-to-firm relationship duration data. We then demonstrate how relationship stickiness shapes trade dynamics in response to uncertainty shocks. We find that episodes of uncertainty lead to a decline in the overall establishment of new business relationships, with th…

  • The real effects of tax havens

Annette Alstadsæter, Ronald B Davies et al.•CHAPTER•Research Handbook On The…•2024

It is common to summarize the impact of tax havens as a shift of tax revenues from high to low-tax jurisdictions. This chapter discusses the economic impact of tax havens that goes beyond a zero-sum transfer of the tax base, what we label real effects. We review the literature and focus on exploring how profit shifting affects employment, investment, and innovation in firms. We consider in turn how real effects shape market structure and their im…

  • A Simple Theory of Deep Trade Integration

Open Access•Mathieu Parenti, Gonzague Vannoorenberghe•ARTICLE•Journal of the European Economic…•2024

Which countries should aim for regulatory cooperation, and to what extent should they pursue it? We develop an imperfectly competitive trade model that accounts for differences in technology and regulatory preferences regarding local consumption externalities across countries. Each country sets unique product standards, and firms incur costs when tailoring products to different markets. Trade occurs when the benefits of comparative advantages out…

  • Lobbying for Globalisation

    Open Access•Michael Blanga-Gubbay, Paola Conconi et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 53

Using detailed information from lobbying reports filed under the Lobbying Disclosure Act, we construct a unique dataset that allows us to identify which firms lobby on free trade agreements negotiated by the United States, their positions (in favour or against) and their lobbying efforts on the ratification of each trade agreement. Using this dataset, we show that lobbying on free trade agreements is dominated by large multinational firms, which …

  • Knocking on Tax Haven’s Door: Multinational Firms and Transfer Pricing

Ronald B Davies, Julien Martins et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2018

This paper analyzes the transfer pricing of multinational firms. Intrafirm prices may systematically deviate from arm’s-length prices for two motives: pricing to market and tax avoidance. Using French firm-level data on arm’s-length and intrafirm export prices, we find that the sensitivity of intrafirm prices to foreign taxes is reinforced once we control for pricing-to-market determinants. Most important, we find no evidence of tax avoidance if …
