Macroeconomic Implications of Cash Limits in the Public Sector
A cash limit is a fixed amount of money available for pay prior to the wage negotiations in the public sector. This paper examines the macroeconomic implications of cash limits in a unionized economy with decentralized wage bargaining in both private and public sectors. I focus in particular on the linkages between changes in the cash limit, wage‐setting, and employment in public and private sectors. Equilibrium unemployment is independent of the…

The Swedish Wage Stucture: The Rise and Fall of Solidarity Wage Policy?
Wage inequality in Sweden declined precipitously during the 1960s and the 1970s. There was a sharp reduction in overall wage dispersion and in the relative earnings advantage of highly-educated workers, a marked narrowing of wage differences between men and women, and a trend increase in youth relative wages. There was also a substantial narrowing of wage differentials among workers within broad occupational and educational groups. The trend decl…
Incidence Analysis of Financing Unemployment Benefits in a Partially Unionized Economy
The incidence of unemployment benefits are analysed under alternative financing modes in a two-sector general equilibrium model with a segmented labour market where one sector is unionized and queue unemployment exists. Specific tax incidence as well as balanced budget incidence are analysed. The main results are: (i) The distributional effects are identical irrespective of which factor is taxed in the union sector, (ii) the distributional effect…

The interaction of migration, income, and employment in Sweden
A common approach in migration studies is to explain interregional migration by single-equation models. Such models are likely to suffer from simultaneous-equation bias when used in studies attempting to analyze migration over a long period of time. In this study, a simultaneous-equation approach is applied, which takes account of the interdependence between migration and income and employment changes. The four-equation model is estimated for 70 …
