Collective Labor Supply, Taxes, and Intrahousehold Allocation
Most empirical studies of the impact of labour income taxation on the labour supply behaviour of households use a unitary modelling approach. In this paper we empirically analyze income taxation and the choice of working hours by combining the collective approach for household behaviour and the discrete hours choice framework with fixed costs of work. We identify the sharing rule parameters with data on working hours of both the husband and the w…

The Effect of Private Wealth on the Retirement Rate
Theoretical models predict a positive effect of the level of private wealth on retirement. In many countries, there is a trend towards the introduction of more individual freedom of choice in pension schemes. The level of private wealth will become an increasingly important factor in the retirement decision. Empirical analysis of retirement behaviour of elderly workers so far has concentrated on properties of the pension system. For a sample of e…
An Empirical Model of Collective Household Labour Supply with Non‐Participation
I present a structural empirical model of collective household labour supply that includes the non-participation decision. I specify a simultaneous model for hours, participation and wages of husband and wife. I discuss the problems of identification and statistical coherency that arise in the application of the collective household labour supply model. The model includes random effects and it is estimated using a panel data set of Dutch couples.…
Financial Wealth, Consumption Smoothing and Income Shocks Arising from Job Loss
One of the reasons for setting up an unemployment insurance scheme is to allow job losers to smooth consumption. We test for the impact of unemployment benefits on changes in household food expenditure of individuals who have recently experienced a job loss. We also study the relationship between unemployment benefits and the financial wealth of the unemployed. From our empirical analysis we conclude that, for households without financial wealth …
