Unintended Consequences of the 2015 Refugee Surge on Residential Building Permits in Germany
In this paper, we examine how building permit rates, in particular those for housing in one- and two-family homes, were affected by the presence of refugees in the wake of the 2015/16 refugee surge in Germany. Our panel data set covers all German counties with available data over the years 2011–2019. Our results show that a larger presence of refugees tended to lower the building permit rate, not in the very short run but over time. The effect is…

Determinants of Urban land development
This study examines the extent and determinants of urban land expansion and fragmentation for 104 U.S. metropolitan areas for the time period 2001-2019. It leverages temporally and spatially consistent, satellite-based data. The analysis distinguishes among four different intensity levels of urban development and makes use of a number of landscape fragmentation metrics. Estimation relies on two-way fixed-effects panel techniques. Our time fixed-e…
Birth Cohort and the Specialization Gap Between Same-Sex and Different-Sex Couples
We examine differences in household specialization between same-sex and different-sex couples within and across three birth cohorts: Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Generation Y. Using three measures of household specialization, we find that same-sex couples are less likely than their different-sex counterparts to exhibit a high degree of specialization. However, the “specialization gap” between same-sex and different-sex couples narrows across b…

Some Evidence on the Efficiency of the Forward Market for Foreign Exchange from Monte-Carlo Experiments
A Monte-Carlo approach is used to provide new insights into tests of the forward foreign exchange market efficiency hypothesis (FMEH). A whole range of alternative hypotheses regarding price determination in the forward market is examined for the /DM case, including different expectations schemes, a risk premium model derived from international asset pricing theory and the novel idea that the empirical evidence on the FMEH is the result of interv…
