Dispersion Over the Business Cycle
We characterise the cyclical dispersion of firm-level (physical) productivity and demand shocks using Swedish microdata. Demand shock dispersion increases by more than productivity shock dispersion in recessions and explains most of the variation in sales growth dispersion. Productivity shocks pass through incompletely to prices and hence have a limited effect on sales dispersion. We directly estimate demand curves and reject the constant elastic…
Firm-Level Shocks and Labour Flows
We analyse how labour flows respond to permanent idiosyncratic shifts in firm-level production functions and demand curves using very detailed Swedish micro data. Shocks to firms’ physical productivity have only modest effects on firm-level employment decisions. In contrast, we document rapid and substantial employment adjustments through hires and separations in response to firm-level demand shocks. The choice of adjustment margin depends on the…

Measures of Technology and the Business Cycle
We analyze the technology shocks identified by two different structural VAR models and compare them with classical and refined Solow residuals. The measures of technology are reasonably highly correlated. Alternative identifying restrictions in the VARs, however, have different theoretical as well as empirical consequences for the technology shocks. King et al.'s (1991) model and the classical Solow residual capture a mixture of technology and la…
Capital Adjustment Patterns in Swedish Manufacturing Firms
We study the capital adjustment process in Swedish manufacturing Firms and relate the findings to standard models of capital adjustment. We have three findings. ("i") The capital accumulation process is highly volatile and non-persistent. ("ii") An "S", "s" model fits the data well in some, but not all, dimensions. Also, a model with irreversible capital goes a long way in matching the data. In fact, we argue that it is much more likely that the …
