Earnings Expectations and Educational Sorting
We estimate ex‐ante treatment effects in earnings for attending university using survey data of the expectations of Stockholm high school students under different educational counterfactuals. Although the levels of earnings expectations are reasonable, they differ between stated and revealed educational preferences. The average ex‐ante return is estimated to be 45%, with higher returns for female, high SES, and high math score students. The retur…
Effects, Experiences, and Ethical Aspects of Active Labor Market Programs in Social Work for Long-Term Social Assistance Recipients
Purpose: To assess the effects of supporting labor market interventions for adults outside the labor market who are long-term social assistance recipients, and to present participant experiences of return-to-work interventions. Method: A systematic review where direct and indirect client interventions were synthesized. We included 26 quantitative studies (seven randomized and 19 based on register data about 5.8 million persons), and 14 qualitativ…
Early Interventions and Disability Insurance
We estimate the effects of early assessments of an individual’s need for vocational rehabilitation in the Swedish sickness insurance system using a field experiment. One of the interventions increases the flow to disability benefits by 20%. The effect is larger for unemployed individuals, who also are covered by the sickness insurance scheme. This result is in line with a theoretical model with moral hazard and asymmetric information in which ind…
Parenthood and the Gender Gap in Pay
We compare the income and wage trajectories of women to those of their male partners before and after parenthood. Focusing on the within-couple gap allows us to control for both observed and unobserved attributes of the spouse and to estimate both short- and long-term effects of entering parenthood. We find that 15 years after the first child has been born, the male-female gender gaps in income and wages have increased by 32 and 10 percentage poi…
Dynamic Treatment Assignment
We discuss estimation of treatment effects when the timing of treatment is the outcome of a stochastic process. We show that the duration framework in discrete time provides a fertile ground for effect evaluations. We suggest easy-to-use nonparametric survival function matching estimators that can be used to estimate the time profile of the treatment. We study the small-sample properties of the proposed estimators and apply one of them to evaluate…
