  • Is the output growth rate in Nipa a welfare measure

    Open Access•Jorge Durán, Omar Licandro•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2024•References: 1

This paper shows that, in a dynamic general equilibrium framework, the rate of output growth as measured by national income and product accounts reflects changes in welfare in the precise sense of equivalent variation. The main argument is straightforward. In a two-sector dynamic general equilibrium model of heterogeneous households, recursive preferences and quasi-concave technology, the Bellman equation provides a representation of household pr…

  • Trade, Firm Selection and Innovation

    Open Access•Giammario Impullitti, Omar Licandro•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 51

We study the welfare gains from trade in an economy with heterogeneous firms, variable markups and endogenous growth. Variable markups arise from oligopolistic competition, and cost-reducing innovation is the engine of long-run growth. Trade liberalisation stiffens competition by reducing markups, generating tougher firm selection and increasing the aggregate productivity level. Selection increases firms’ incentives to innovate, thereby leading t…

  • The Child is Father Of the Man

    Open Access•David De La Croix, Omar Licandro•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2013•Cited by: 11•References: 49

We propose a new theory of the demographic transition based on the evidence that body development during childhood is an important predictor of adult life expectancy. This theory is embodied in an OLG framework where fertility, longevity and education all result from individual decisions. The model displays different regimes, allowing the economy to move slowly from an initial Malthusian regime towards the Modern era. The dynamics reproduces the …
