Gender Norms and Female Labor Supply
We study how economic development affects female labor force participation, focusing on the role of gender norms. Analyzing quasi-random variation in provincial exports in reunified Vietnam from 2002 to 2018, we find that positive economic shocks reduced women’s labor market engagement, particularly among married women from wealthier households and those with husbands in more skilled occupations. We analyze an immigration reform in Denmark that tightened refugee immigrants’eligibility criteria for permanent residency to incentivize their labor market attachment and acquisition of local language skills. Contrary to what the reform intended, the overall employment of those affected decreased while their average language proficiency remained largely unchanged. We relate origin-destination real price differences to immigrants’ reservation wages and their career trajectories, exploiting administrative data from Germany and the 2004 enlargement of the European Union.
