  • Economic Inequality and Covid-19 Deaths and Cases in the First Wave

    James Davies, James B Davies•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•2021•Cited by: 6•References: 2

The cross-country relationship of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) case and death rates with previously measured income inequality and poverty in the pandemic's first wave is studied, controlling for other underlying factors, in a worldwide sample of countries. If the estimated associations are interpreted as causal, the Gini coefficient for income has a significant positive effect on both cases and deaths per capita in regressions using the f…

  • Reforming Canada’s Disaster Assistance Programs

    James Davies, James B Davies•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•2020

Canada’s disaster financial assistance (DFA) system provides benefits through the provinces, subsidized by the federal DFA Arrangements (DFAA) above damage thresholds that were tripled in 2015. Disaster incidence and severity is increasing. Flooding is most costly, then storms and wildfire. The need for policy changes is analyzed, with particular attention to flooding. It is argued that flood coverage should be required under home insurance, subs…

  • Comparing global inequality of income and wealth

James Davies, James B Davies et al.•BOOK•Comparing global inequality of…•2018

This paper is the first to compare global trends in income and wealth inequality this century. It is based on large income and wealth microdata samples designed to be representative of all countries in the world. Measured by the Gini coefficient, inequality between countries accounts for about two-thirds of global income inequality, but noticeably less— around one half—of wealth inequality. Broadly similar results are found for different years an…

  • Economic Efficiency of Federal Provision of Scientific Information and Support for Science Research in Canada

    James Davies, James B Davies et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Federal provision of scientific information and support for science research have declined significantly in recent years, and a trend away from pure research toward applied and commercializable research has begun. This commentary asks whether those and other trends in this area can be justified in terms of economic efficiency. It is argued that the marginal benefits of scientific information and research have likely risen relative to production c…

  • Closing the 49th Parallel

    James Davies, James B Davies et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 2

We draw attention to, and begin to consider the implications of, the severe restrictions on emigration by Canadians to the United States introduced under the US Immigration Act of 1965. These restrictions came into effect in 1968 and lasted until mobility began to increase to some extent under the free trade agreements in the early 1990s. This is an unusual episode in Canadian history, the implications of which for the Canadian economy and for Ca…

  • Uncertain Lifetime, Consumption, and Dissaving in Retirement

    James Davies, James B Davies•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•1981•Cited by: 23•References: 8

This paper asks whether the continued accumulation, or mild dissaving, observed among the retired can be explained by uncertain lifetime. In the absence of annuities, after an initial period influenced by borrowing constraints, under constant relative risk aversion, uncertain lifetime depresses consumption by a proportion increasing with age if the elasticity of intertemporal substitution in consumption is "small." Illustrative computations, base…
