On the predictions of cumulative prospect theory for third and fourth order risk preferences
In this paper, we analyse higher-order risky choices by the representative cumulative prospect theory (CPT) decision maker from three alternative reference points. These are the status quo, average payout and maxmin. The choice tasks we consider in our analysis include binary risks, and are the ones employed in the experimental literature on higher order risk preferences. We demonstrate that the choices made by the representative subject depend o…
Smooth Transition Models and Arbitrage Consistency
Slow adjustment of real exchange rate towards equilibrium in linear models has long puzzled researchers, stimulating the adoption of nonlinear models. The exponential smooth transition model has been particularly successful, providing faster adjustment speeds. This paper discusses some of its theoretical limitations, for example that expectations are adaptive. We propose a new nonlinear model conceptually superior to the ESTAR model since it is c…
Optimal Discretionary Monetary Policy in a Model of Asymmetric Central Bank Preferences
This paper considers optimal monetary policy in the context of the central bank adopting an asymmetric objective function. Our results show that under asymmetric preferences, many of the extant results on the time consistency problem need no longer hold
Insider Trading, Herding Behaviour and Market Plungers in the British Horse–race Betting Market
Crafts [N. F. R. Crafts (1985) Economica , 52 , 295—304] suggested that a pronounced shortening of bookmaker odds in horse–race betting markets could indicate the presence of insider traders. This paper uses the Shin [H. S. Shin (1993) Economic Journal , 103 , 1141—53] measure of the incidence of insider trading at the beginning of the betting period (opening prices) and at the end of it (starting prices) to distinguish the shortening of odds cau…

Transactions Costs and Nonlinear Adjustment in Real Exchange Rates; An Empirical Investigation
Equilibrium models of real exchange rate determination in the presence of transactions costs imply a nonlinear adjustment process toward purchasing power parity (PPP). Conventional cointegration tests, which ignore the effect of transactions costs, may be biased against the long-run PPP hypothesis. The authors' results, using both monthly data for the interwar period and annual data spanning two countries, clearly reject the linear framework in f…
Information, Prices and Efficiency in a Fixed-Odds Betting Market
This paper examines the efficiency of the Association Football betting market in the United Kingdom. The notable features of this market are that the odds are fixed some time before matches occur and differ between bookmaking firms. While there is some evidence of ex post inefficiency, there does not appear to be profitable betting strategies that could have been implemented ex ante during the sample period.
