  • A Functional-Form-Free Test of the Research and Development/Firm Size Relationship

James M Holmes, Patricia A Hutton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•1991

Parametric testing of the relationship between research and development (R&D) and firm size is limited by the hypothesized functional form, predominantly assumed to be linear in the logarithms of both variables. With a transformation of variables, the null hypothesis of constant returns to scale can be tested employing the multiple-rank F-test procedure. The findings of this analytical approach suggest that R&D intensity varies with firm size in …

  • On the Casual Relationship between Government Expenditures and National Income

James M Holmes, Patricia A Hutton•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•1990

A research strategy is suggested that separates the issue of inference from the problems of prediction or of quantitative policy analysis of an empirical parametric model and illustrates a new methodology that enables this in a test for prima facie causality. Unlike the conventional parametric test, the more powerful multiple rank F test is invariant to monotonic transformations of the variables and independent of the error distribution. Employin…

  • The Process of International Adjustment under Conditions of Full Employment

    James M Holmes•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•1973

This paper utilizes a new formulation of the determination of capital flows within a Keynesian framework. In the basic spirit of Professor Metzler's pioneering work, capital flows and interest rates are determined simultaneously by the savings and investment behaviour in both countries. The question posed by Metzler was whether the existence of capitals flows decreased or increased the role of gold movements in the process of international adjust…
