  • Growth Expectations, Undue Optimism, and Short-Run Fluctuations

Zeno Enders, Michael Kleemann et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2021

This paper proposes a two-step procedure in order to identify belief shocks—shocks to expectations about the current state of the economy. First, we use the Survey of Professional Forecasters to measure nowcast errors about contemporaneous output growth. Second, we extract belief shocks from nowcast errors, once by regressing them on existing measures of structural shocks and once by imposing sign restrictions on a VAR model. Using both approache…

  • Heterogeneous Consumers, Segmented Asset Markets and the Real Effects of Monetary Policy

    Open Access•Zeno Enders•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2020•References: 36

This article proposes a novel mechanism by which changes in the distribution of money holdings have real aggregate effects. I develop a flexible-price model of segmented asset markets in which monetary policy influences the aggregate demand elasticity via heterogenous money holdings. Because varieties of consumption bundles are purchased sequentially, newly injected money disseminates slowly throughout the economy via second-round effects. The mo…

  • Global Banking, Trade, and the International Transmission of the Great Recession

    Open Access•Alexandra Born, Zeno Enders•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 19

We employ a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model to investigate the transmission of the global financial crisis via the collapse of export demand (trade channel) and through losses on cross-border asset holdings (financial channel). Calibrated to German data, the model predicts the trade channel to be twice as important as the financial channel. In the United Kingdom, the latter dominates due to higher foreign-asset holdings, which, at th…
