Unpacking the countercyclicality of post-secondary enrollment in the United States
Using data from the Current Population Survey’s Education Supplement, we examine the countercyclicality of post-secondary education (PSE) enrollment in the U.S. between 1977 and 2023. The unemployment–enrollment relationship is weak prior to 2000 and when Covid-19 years are included, but it is much stronger in 2000-2019. Focusing on these two decades, we show that higher unemployment increases enrollment at both 2- and 4-year colleges. We also sh…
Political Preferences Through Stages of the Covid-19 Pandemic
How durable are the political accountability effects of the worst pandemic in a century? We track the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on political preferences through its “high” and “low” phases in the Czech Republic. Uniquely, we ask about the effects of both the health and the economic costs of the pandemic measured at both personal and municipality levels. Consistent with the literature, we estimate effects suggestive of political accountabil…
Is longer maternal care always beneficial? The impact of a 4-year paid parental leave
We study the impact of an extension of paid family leave in the Czech Republic from 3 to 4 years on children’s long-term outcomes. We find that an additional year of maternal care at age 3 has an adverse effect on children’s human capital investments and labor market attachment. Affected children are 6 percentage points less likely to be enrolled in college and 4 percentage points more likely to be not in education, employment, or training (NEET)…
Choosing a Major and a Partner: Field of Study and Union Formation Among College-Educated Women in Europe
Caught in the Cycle: Economic Conditions at Enrolment and Labour Market Outcomes of College Graduates
We show that cohorts of male graduates who start college during worse economic times earn higher average wages than those who start during better times. This is not explained by differences in selection into employment, economic conditions at graduation, or field of study choices. Graduates who enrol in bad times are not more positively selected based on their high-school outcomes, but they achieve higher college grades and earn higher wages cond…
Occurrence and Rise of Unemployment of Women with Pre-School Children: The Case of the Czech Republic
In this study we explore the timing of the return of women with young children to the labour market after the family leave, using the Czech labor force survey data. We document the evolution of the unemployment risk by the age of their child and the mechanism through which mothers with young children become unemployed. Majority of women return to the labor market when their child is 3 years old. The unemployment rate among women with at least a h…
