Cost-Push and Conflict Inflation: A Discussion of the Italian Case
This study contributes to the ongoing discussion surrounding the recent surge in inflation. It presents an analytical framework and empirically examines inflation trends in Italy. The primary aim is to identify the underlying causes, distributive repercussions, and mechanisms through which inflation is propagated. We adopt a cost-push and distributive conflict perspective on current inflation. Within this perspective, some contributions argue for…

Wealth, Capital and the Theory of Distribution: Some Implications for Piketty’s Analysis
Thomas Piketty’s Capital in the Twenty-First Century (2014) has been spectacularly successful. One reason for this is that while it often challenges received views and supports a non-apologetic interpretation of capitalism, at the same time it relies on mainstream economics. This theoretical framework, however, is not always conducive to consistency and interpretative accuracy. This paper points out some of the book’s analytical weaknesses and sh…

Sraffa and the Reconstruction of Economic Theory: Volume Two
There has been little explicit discussion of the meaning of the output trends addressed in analyses of growth and their relation to actual magnitudes. This paper examines the weakness of the most common approach, which appears to extend the relation between theoretical and actual magnitudes used in the theories of prices and distribution automatically to the analysis of growth, and goes on to question the implied assumption that the trend of outp…
Sraffa and the Reconstruction of Economic Theory: Volume One
The Ramsey (1928) accumulation path is characterized as a saddle-path in the standard presentations of the model based on the works of Cass (1965) and Koopmans (1965).From a mathematical stance a saddle-path is unstable: if the system is exactly on that path, it converges to the steady state of the system; if it diverges slightly from that path, it shifts indefinitely from the steady state. The 'transversality' condition is then invoked in the Ram…
Sraffa's 1930 manuscripts on the representative firm and Marshall's theory of value and business profit
The present paper provides an account of Sraffa's unpublished manuscripts on the representative firm in Marshall's theory of value and business profits and some background to their contents. In addition to their historical interest, the old debates on this notion might stir new reflections on a concept that Sraffa considered ‘obsolete’ back in the 1930s, but is still very much in use
Germany and the European and Global Crises
Beginning with the current global and European imbalances and crises and consideration of the German reaction to them, the paper explores the political economy origins of the conservative German policy stance. It emerges that an export-oriented economy was a deliberate decision of the German elite after World War II and that the external constraint may be regarded as appropriately designed for internal discipline and efficiency in a self-reinforc…
Technical Change, Effective Demand and Employment
Ricardo and Marx saw technological change as a possible cause of long-period unemployment. Neoclassical and Schumpeterian economists regard technological unem ployment as a transitory phenomenon. This paper argues that the capital critique (i) demolishes the neoclassical claim that market mechanisms will restore full employment whenever workers are displaced by technical change, and (ii) rehabilitates the old Ricardian argument that automatic com…
Inflation, Unemployment and Hysteresis: An alternative view
This paper integrates ideas concerning the influence of the interest rate on the rate of profits with an analysis of inflation and its relation with unemployment. Inflation is regarded, as in Kaleckian contributions, as resulting from inconsistent claims on income, but the approach taken leads to different conclusions concerning the effects of inflation (or deflation) on income distribution, and the circumstances giving rise to acceleration of in…

The Theory of Wages in Classical Economics: A Study of Adam Smith, David Ricardo and their Contemporaries
This important new book is the first specific study on the classical theory of wages to appear for more than 50 years and as such fills an important gap in the literature. Antonella Stirati argues that the wage-fund theory played no part in the theory of wages expounded by Ricardo and his predecessors. Classical wage theory is shown to be analytically consistent but very different from contemporary theory, particularly as it did not envisage an i…
