  • Politically connected cities

Open Access•Guglielmo Barone, Guido de Blasio et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Economics•2025•Referências: 30

This paper documents the higher growth experienced by politically connected municipalities in Italy between the end of World War II and the fall of the Berlin Wall. It leverages the peculiarities of the institutional setting and compares population growth in connected and unconnected municipalities with similar characteristics at the beginning of the period. Our results indicate a population premium of 7.4% over 40 years. Connected municipalities…

  • The impact of place‐based policies on interpersonal income inequality

Open Access•Giuseppe Albanese, Guglielmo Barone et al.•ARTICLE•Economica•2023•Referências: 41

This paper assesses the causal impact of the European Union (EU) cohesion policy, aimed at reducing the regional divide within the EU, on interpersonal income inequality in receiving areas. We leverage a severe contraction of financing, which took place in an Italian region in 2007, and adopt a difference‐in‐discontinuity empirical design to show that the Gini index (of income) at the municipality level goes down because of the end of the policy.…

  • Losing My Connection

Open Access•Guglielmo Barone, Litterio Mirenda et al.•ARTICLE•Economica•2021•Referências: 28

The paper examines the causal impact of bank–firm interlocking directorates on a firm’s access to credit. We exploit matched bank–firm panel data containing detailed information on individual loans and on the governing bodies of both the bank and the firm. Identification hinges on the exogenous break up of connections occurring when the supervisory authority places a bank under special administration, resetting its board. For these banks, we comp…

  • How do House Prices Respond to Mortgage Supply

Open Access•Guglielmo Barone, Francesco David et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2020•Referências: 1

We examine the impact of household mortgages on house prices. Using biannual data on Italian cities in the period 2003–2015, we build an exogenous and fully data-driven indicator of mortgage supply stance and use it as instrument for actual extended mortgages. Our results indicate that mortgages have a positive and significant causal effect on house prices, with an estimated elasticity of around 0.1. The estimated effect is larger during the expa…

  • Service Regulation and Growth

    Open Access•Guglielmo Barone, Federico Cingano•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2011•Citada por: 2•Referências: 24

We study the effects of anti-competitive service regulation by examining whether OECD countries with less anti-competitive regulation see a better economic performance of manufacturing industries using less-regulated services more intensively. Our results indicate that lower service regulation translates into faster value added, productivity, and export growth of downstream service-intensive industries. The negative growth-effect of anti-competit…
