  • On the Early Holocene

    Open Access•Nicolas Marceau, Gordon M Myers et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2006•Cited by: 2•References: 22

We consider a world in which the mode of food production, foraging or agriculture, is endogenous, and in which technology grows exogenously. Within a model of coalition formation, we allow individuals to form co-operative communities (bands) of foragers or farmers rationally. At the lowest levels of technology, equilibrium entails the grand coalition of foragers, a co-operative structure which avoids over-exploitation of the environment. But at a…

  • Food Prices and the Timing of Welfare Payments

Georges A Tanguay, Georges Tanguay et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•2005•References: 2

This is a study of the relationship between the timing of social welfare payments and the price of food for one neighbourhood in Montreal. First, we show that the availability of social welfare resources affects grocery prices throughout the month. Second, average grocery prices are lowest during cheque-receipt week and rise by 6.8 percent to 11…

  • Investment in Education and the Time Inconsistency of Redistributive Tax Policy

Robin Boadway, Nicolas Marceau et al.•ARTICLE•Economica•1996•Cited by: 1

Time inconsistency of tax policy is shown to arise in a setting where households differ in their ability to accumulate wealth and where the government has redistributional objectives. It is assumed that wealth accumulation takes the form of human capital acquired through education. The government is precluded from redistributing to a first-best optimum by a self-selection constraint. The second-best is shown to be time-inconsistent. In the time-c…
