  • Are Consumers (Approximately) Rational? Shifting the Burden of Proof

Laurens Cherchye, Thomas Demuynck et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2025

We present a statistical test for the hypothesis of (approximate) utility maximization on the basis of nonparametric revealed preference conditions. We take as null hypothesis that the consumer behaves randomly, and we reject this hypothesis only if the data provides sufficient evidence to support the alternative hypothesis of approximate utility maximization. Our statistical test uses a permutation method to operationalize the principle of rando…

  • Group Consumption with Caring Individuals

    Open Access•Laurens Cherchye, Sam Cosaert et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 6

We propose a novel approach to model joint consumption decisions of individuals who care for each other. The model encompasses a continuum of group consumption models situated between the fully co-operative model and the non-cooperative model without caring. We also define a measure for the degree of intragroup cooperation that quantifies how close the observed group behaviour is to fully co-operative behaviour. Following a revealed preference ap…

  • Nonparametric Welfare and Demand Analysis with Unobserved Individual Heterogeneity

Sam Cosaert, Thomas Demuynck•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2018

This paper combines revealed preference and nonparametric estimation techniques to obtain nonparametric bounds on the distribution of the money metric utility and demand functions over a population of heterogeneous households. Our approach is independent of any functional specification on the household utility functions. Our method applies the weak axiom of revealed preference to a population of heterogeneous households. Although this does not pr…

  • Non-parametric Analysis of Multi-output Production with Joint Inputs

    Open Access•Laurens Cherchye, Thomas Demuynck et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 52

We focus on analysing cost minimising production behaviour in multi-output settings. We distinguish between two approaches for modelling the use of joint inputs. The cooperative approach assumes cost minimisation at the aggregate firm level, while the non-cooperative approach assumes cost minimisation at the level of the individual output division. Our framework extends the existing non-parametric framework for analysing single output production.…

  • Nash‐Bargained Consumption Decisions: A Revealed Preference Analysis

Open Access•Laurens Cherchye, Thomas Demuynck et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2013•References: 44

  • Inequality Adjusted Income Growth

Open Access•Thomas Demuynck, Dirk Van De Gaer•ARTICLE•Economica•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 33

We introduce and characterize a new measure of aggregate income growth that allows us to give more weight to individuals with lower individual income growth. Our measure includes several important measures of directional mobility encountered in the literature. The empirical application compares the measure of income growth between the USA and Germany, and finds that giving more weight to individuals with lower income growth reverses the ranking

  • Revealed Preference Analysis of Non‐Cooperative Household Consumption

    Open Access•Laurens Cherchye, Thomas Demuynck et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2011•Cited by: 9•References: 5

We develop a revealed preference approach to analyse non-unitary household consumption behaviour that is not cooperative (or Pareto efficient). We derive global necessary and sufficient conditions for data consistency with the model. We show that the conditions can be verified by means of relatively straightforward mixed integer programming methods, which is particularly attractive in view of empirical analysis. Our framework extends to tests for…
