  • Socio-Economic Inequities and Household Sanitation in Rural India: A Comparative Analysis for Three States

    Open Access•Homi Katrak•ARTICLE•Social Change•2014•References: 2

There is widespread concern about the socio-economic inequities that disadvantage certain households in rural India. This article focuses on inequities in the context of the shortage of household sanitation. Lack of proper sanitation is a major environmental risk to children’s health and an inconvenience, particularly for women. We undertake a comparative analysis of three states, namely Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and the Punjab. These three states …

    Open Access•Homi Katrak, Katrak Homi•ARTICLE•Journal of Developing Societies•2012•References: 9

This essay focuses on how marked losses in incomes amongst poor households may lead parents to make significant cutbacks in their expenditures on their children’s education, and perhaps also put their children to work. It is based on simulation exercises using data on farming households in Punjab state, India. This research generated three main results. First, even small–moderate losses in incomes, ranging from 6 to 10 percent, can cause parents …

  • Payments for imported technologies, market‐rivalry and adaptive activity in the newly industrialising countries

Homi Katrak•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•1988

Some enterprises in the newly industrialising countries have recently begun to develop their technological capabilities by first learning to adapt imported technologies. This article examines two questions raised by this import‐and‐adapt strategy. First, is the level of the adaptive activity of an individual enterprise influenced by its payments for the imported technologies? Second, in situations where the importer faces market‐rivals, does the …

  • Industry structure, foreign trade and price‐cost margins in Indian manufacturing industries

Homi Katrak•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•1980

The influence of industry concentration, foreign trade and protection on price‐cost margins in Indian manufacturing industries are examined with the use of multiple regression analysis. The tests show that import‐competition dampens the margins while protection has the opposite effect. Moreover industries with relatively higher exports appear to have higher margins. Industry concentration shows an inverted‐U‐shaped influence. This result may be d…

  • Commodity concentration and export fluctuations: A probability analysis

Homi Katrak•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•1973

This paper examines the argument that diversification of exports can help reduce export fluctuations. Our main point is that the problem of export fluctuations is not uni‐dimensional but has to be defined with reference to some characteristics of the country, e.g. ability to forecast fluctuations, or availability of reserves to meet their effects. Focusing on two aspects of fluctuations—one concerned with the average amplitude and the other with …
