Technology and regional policy: A case study of Northern Ireland
The importance of technical change, through the innovative activity of industry, has received a lot of attention in the regional economic literature. Regional policy has now begun to reflect the changing emphasis in the recent literature, and especially the key role of inventive activity in achieving long-run self-sustaining regional growth. This paper concentrates on research activities in terms of inventive inputs (R&D) and innovative outputs (…

HARRIS R. I. D. (1990) The Standard Capital Grant in Northern Ireland, 1954–1988, Reg. Studies 24, 343–355. This paper examines the historical background to the Standard Capital Grant in Northern Ireland, the rationale behind capital subsidies, their effectiveness in the province (vis à vis output, employment, capital stock and factor efficiency levels), and the government's current case against this form of regional assistance. While there have …
Sub‐Systems of Industrial Relations: The Spatial Dimension in Britain
Market Structure and External Control in the Regional Economies of Great Britain
This paper establishes the degree to which markets are dominated by a limited number of firms, and the implications of this for the indigenous firms in each region that are attempting to sell in national markets. The author then looks at the causes of industrial concentration, which has largely been achieved through the acquisitions and mergers of firms located in various regions. He then goes on to consider the possible consequences of the "bran…
Technological Change and Regional Development in the UK: Evidence from the SPRU Database on Innovations
HARRIS R. I. D. (1988) Technological change and regional development in the UK; evidence from the SPRU database on innovations, Reg. Studies 22, 361–374. This paper makes use of a unique data source—the SPRU survey of significant innovations—to show the overwhelming dominance of the South East region in terms of its innovative activities over the period 1945–83. It has also been possible to highlight the effect of industrial structure on innovati…
The Role of Manufacturing in Regional Growth
HARRIS R. I. D. (1987) The role of manufacturing in regional growth, Reg. Studies 21, 301–312. Since a shift in regional policy away from manufacturing to aiding services is being advocated, this paper re-examines the role of manufacturing in regional growth from both an empirical and theoretical viewpoint. First of all, it discusses the importance of manufacturing's share of output, concluding that in output terms, and prior to 1979, manufacturi…

Harris R. I. D. (1983) The measurement of capital services in production for UK regions, 1968–78, Reg. Studies 17, 169–180. The purpose of this study is to obtain meaningful measures of the factor input capital, so that estimation of the production function is possible at a regional level. Firstly, gross stock measures are converted into a net stock series and the series obtained are then adjusted for levels of utilization. Finally, some use of t…
