  • The effects of emotions on stated preferences for environmental change: A re-examination

    Open Access•Yilong Xu, Mikolaj Czajkowski et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2025•References: 6

A large literature in behavioral science suggests that people's emotional condition can have an impact on their choices. We consider how people's emotions affect their stated preferences and willingness to pay for changes in environmental quality, focusing on the effects of incidental emotions. We use videos to induce emotional states and test the replicability of the results reported in Hanley et al. (2017). Additionally, we employ Face Reader s…

  • Bubbles in asset markets and the heterogeneity of beliefs

Open Access•Eizo Akiyama, Yukihiko Funaki et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Behavior &…•2025•References: 2

  • Does Disgust Increase Unethical Behavior? A Replication of Winterich, Mittal, and Morales (2014)

Open Access•Tamar Kugler, Charles Noussair et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychological and…•2021

We consider the relationship between disgust and ethical behavior. Winterich, Mittal, and Morales report several experiments finding that disgust increases unethical behavior. We replicated three of their studies, using high-powered designs with a total of 1,239 participants, three different procedures to induce disgust, and three different measures of unethical behavior. We observe no effect of disgust on unethical behavior in any of the studies…

  • On Trust and Disgust: Evidence From Face Reading and Virtual Reality

Open Access•Tamar Kugler, Bohan Ye et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychological and…•2020

We report three studies exploring the relationship between disgust and trust. Study 1a measured emotions using face-reading technology while participants played a repeated trust game. We observed a negative correlation between trust and disgust. Study 1b employed self-reports along with the face reader. The self-report procedure adversely affected participants’ emotional state and eliminated the correlation between trust and other emotions. Study…

  • From the Lab to the Field: Cooperation among Fishermen

Jan Stoop, Charles Noussair et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2012•Cited by: 14•References: 8

We conduct a field experiment to measure cooperation among groups of recreational fishermen at a privately owned fishing facility. Group earnings are greater when group members catch fewer fish. Consistent with classical economic theory, though in contrast to prior results from laboratory experiments, we find no cooperation. A series of additional treatments identifies causes of the difference. We rule out the subject pool and the laboratory sett…

  • The Impact of Simple Institutions in Experimental Economies with Poverty Traps

Open Access•C Monica Capra, Tomomi Tanaka et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 37

We introduce an experimental approach to study the effect of institutions on economic growth. In \neach period, agents produce and trade output in a market, and allocate it to consumption and \ninvestment. Productivity is higher if total capital stock is above a threshold. The threshold externality \ngenerates two steady states – a suboptimal poverty trap and an optimal steady state. In a baseline \ntreatment, the economies converge to the povert…

  • The Principles of Exchange Rate Determination in an International Finance Experiment

Charles Noussair, Charles N Noussair et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•1997•Cited by: 5

This paper reports the first experiments designed to explore the behavior of economies with prominent features of international finance. Two “countries,” each with its own currency, were created. International trade could take place only through the operation of markets for currency. The law of one price and the flow of funds theory of exchange rate determination were used to produce general equilibrium models that captured much of the behavior o…
