Who Gets Vaccinated? Cognitive and Non‐Cognitive Predictors of Individual Behaviour in Pandemics
This study investigates different cognitive and non‐cognitive characteristics associated with individuals' willingness to get vaccinated against Covid‐19 and their actual vaccination status. Our empirical analysis is based on data obtained from three survey waves conducted in 2021 among about 2,000 individuals living in the German state of North Rhine‐Westphalia. We find that individuals with a high level of trait reactance – a personality charac…
Obesity And Cash Rewards
In a multi-phase randomized controlled trial, we examine the impacts of cash rewards of EUR 150 and EUR 300 for reducing body weight on the likelihood of weight loss and weight-related behavioral change among 700 obese individuals. We find effects during all experimental phases, including 18 months after exposure to the incentives. Additional monetary rewards of EUR 250 and EUR 500 provided to participants who had lost a substantial amount of bod…
Empirical Studies with Micro-Data from Official Statistics in Germany
For twenty years the Statistical Offices in Germany have provided access to confidential micro-data on individuals and firms in their Research Data Centers (RDC).These data are extensively used by the scientific community for empirical studies in a wide variety of fields. The four papers in this special issue of the Journal of Economics and Statistics apply micro-data from official statistics.Fauth et al. ( 2023) use a novel database with informat…
The Impact of Forced Migration on Mortality: Evidence From German Pension Insurance Records
We examine the long-run effects of forced migration for individuals who were displaced from Eastern Europe to Germany in the aftermath of World War II. Evidence suggests that displaced individuals were worse off economically, facing a considerably lower income and a higher unemployment risk than comparable nondisplaced Germans, even 20 years after being expelled. We extend this literature by investigating mortality outcomes. Using social security…
Nuclear power plant closures and local housing values: Evidence from Fukushima and the German housing market
The Economic Integration of Forced Migrants: Evidence for Post‐War Germany
The flight and expulsion of Germans from Eastern Europe after World War II constitutes one of the largest forced population movements in history. We analyse the economic integration of these migrants and their offspring in West Germany. A quarter century after displacement, first‐generation migrants still tend to fare worse economically. Displaced agricultural workers, however, exhibit higher incomes than comparable natives, as displacement cause…

The savings behavior of temporary and permanent migrants in Germany
The Blinder–Oaxaca Decomposition for Nonlinear Regression Models
In this article, a general Blinder–Oaxaca decomposition for nonlinear models is derived, which allows the difference in an outcome variable between two groups to be decomposed into several components. We show how, using nldecompose, this general decomposition can be applied to different models with discrete and limited dependent variables. We further demonstrate how the standard errors of the estimated components can be calculated by using Stata'…
Dismissal Protection and Worker Flows in Small Establishments
Based on a large employer–employee matched data‐set, the paper investigates the effects of variable enforcement of German dismissal protection legislation on the employment dynamics in small establishments. Specifically, using a difference‐in‐differences approach, we study the effect of changes in the threshold scale exempting small establishments from dismissal protection provisions on worker flows. In contrast to the predictions of the theory, …
