The Return to Foreign Aid
We estimate the average rate of return on investments financed by aid and by domestic resource mobilisation, using aggregate data. Both returns are expected to vary across countries and time. Consequently we develop a correlated random coefficients model to estimate the average returns. Across different estimators and two different data sources for GDP and investment our findings are remarkably robust; the average gross return on ‘aid investments…
Pre‐Reformation Roots of the Protestant Ethic
We hypothesize that cultural appreciation of hard work and thrift, the Protestant ethic according \nto Max Weber, had a pre-Reformation origin. The proximate source of these values was, according to \nthe proposed theory, the Catholic Order of Cistercians. In support, we first document an impact from \nthe Order on growth within the epicenter of the industrial revolution; English counties that were more \nexposed to Cistercian monasteries experie…
Physiology and Development
We hypothesize that the timing of the fertility transition is an important determinant of comparative physiological development. In support, we provide a model of long-run growth, which elucidates the links between population size, average body size and income during development. Industrialization is shown to be accompanied by a reduction in family size and an intensi cation of nutrition per child. Early transition countries are therefore expecte…
Lightning, IT Diffusion, and Economic Growth Across U.S. States
Empirically, a higher frequency of lightning strikes is associated with slower growth in labor productivity across the 48 contiguous U.S. states after 1990; before 1990, there is no correlation between growth and lightning. Other climate variables (e.g., temperature, rainfall, and tornadoes) do not conform to this pattern. A viable explanation is that lightning influences IT diffusion. By causing voltage spikes and dips, a higher frequency of gro…
Reasonable Expectations and the First Millennium Development Goal
Dual Economies and International Total Factor Productivity Differences
This paper provides a framework that decomposes aggregate total factor productivity ( TFP ) into a component reflecting relative efficiency across sectors, and another component that reflects the absolute level of efficiency. A development accounting analysis suggests that as much as 85% of the international variation in aggregate TFP can be attributed to variation in relative efficiency across sectors. Estimation results show that recent finding…
On the Empirics of Foreign Aid and Growth
This paper takes a fresh look at three issues in the aid effectiveness debate. First, we assess the theoretical case for foreign aid. Using an endogenous growth version of the standard overlapping generations model, we show that aid can be an effective policy tool in spurring growth in poor countries. This model also furnishes a theoretical foundation for the approach taken in many empirical studies. Second, we demonstrate that cross-country data…
