  • Do migrants affect the local product mix? An analysis of the effects and underlying mechanisms

Open Access•Elizabeth Jane Casabianca, Alessia Lo Turco et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 2

We study the impact of immigration on the product mix of the receiving economy by combining information on the local presence of immigrants with a highly detailed definition of the set of goods produced by Italian provinces. For the period 2002–2011, we find that an increase in the share of migrants shifts the manufacturing output composition of host provinces in favour of less capital intensive products. This evidence is based on an IV strategy …

  • Local discoveries and technological relatedness: The role of MNEs, imports and domestic capabilities

    Open Access•Alessia Lo Turco, Daniela Maggioni•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2018•Cited by: 6•References: 19

We explore the role of intra- and extra-regional product-specific capabilities in the introduction of local discoveries—products new to the firm and to its local market—by Turkish manufacturing firms. We find that product discoveries in a NUTS3 region are favoured by their technological proximity to the product mix of co-located foreign firms. Proximity to co-located domestic firms and local imports does not play any role. The high intensity of l…

  • New and Improved: Does FDI Boost Production Complexity in Host Countries

Open Access•Beata Smarzynska Javorcik, Alessia Lo Turco et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2018•Cited by: 19•References: 37

This article examines the relationship between the presence of foreign affiliates and product upgrading by Turkish manufacturing firms. The analysis suggests that Turkish firms in sectors and regions more likely to supply foreign affiliates tend to introduce more complex products, where complexity is captured using a measure developed by Hidalgo and Hausmann (). This finding is robust to controlling for omitted variables, sample selection and pot…

  • On firms’ product space evolution: The role of firm and local product relatedness

Alessia Lo Turco, Daniela Maggioni•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2015•Cited by: 5•References: 21

We explore the role of firm-and local product-specific capabilities in fostering the introduction of new products in the Turkish manufacturing. Firms' product space evolution is characterised by strong cognitive path dependence that, however, is relaxed by firm heterogeneity in terms of size, efficiency and international exposure. The introduction of new products in laggard Eastern regions, which is importantly linked to the evolution of their in…
