  • Marginal material or key data? Understanding community attitudes to a survey about domestic and family violence

    Open Access•Catherine Macphail, Natalia Hanley et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science Quarterly•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 18

Objectives This article examined “marginalia”—participants’ unsolicited additions to a survey conducted in regional Australia examining community attitudes to domestic and family violence. Methods Using mixed methods analysis, we examined whether there were any specific demographic or attitudinal characteristics associated with leaving marginalia on our survey. We used NVivo to thematically organize the types and content of marginalia provided by…

  • Agglomeration economies, taxable rents and government capture: Evidence from a place-based policy

Marius Brülhart, H Blair Simpson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2017•References: 7

We study how industry-level agglomeration economies affect government policy. Using administrative data on firm subsidies in economically lagging regions of Great Britain, we contrast two alternative hypotheses. Economic geography models imply that firms at an industry’s core can sustain higher tax burdens or require lower subsidies than firms in more remote locations. Conversely, political economy models predict firms at the industry’s core to b…

  • Geographic proximity and firm-university innovation linkages: Evidence from Great Britain

Laura Abramovsky, Helen Simpson•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 5

The Centre for Market and Public Organisation (CMPO) is a leading research centre, combining expertise in economics, geography and law. Our objective is to study the intersection between the public and private sectors of the economy, and in particular to understand the right way to organise and deliver public services. The Centre aims to develop research, contribute to the public debate and inform policy-making. CMPO, now an ESRC Research Centre …

  • Firm location decisions, regional grants and agglomeration externalities

  • University Research and the Location of Business R&D

    Open Access•Laura Abramovsky, Rupert Harrison et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2007•Cited by: 25•References: 10

We investigate the relationship between the location of private sector R&D labs and university research departments in Great Britain. We combine establishment-level data on R&D activity with information on levels and changes in research quality from the Research Assessment Exercise. The strongest evidence for co-location is for pharmaceuticals R&D, which is disproportionately located near to relevant university research, particularly 5 or 5* rate…

  • Four bare legs in a bed

    Open Access•H Blair Simpson, Helen Simpson•ARTICLE•Critical Quarterly•1992

When you draw the curtains in the morning you stand in front of the window like a black dog. I am brought down to earth with a bump. It isn't fair

  • Infant diarrhoea and subsequent mortality from heart disease and cancer

Carol Buck, Helen Simpson•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1982•Cited by: 13•References: 4

A preliminary examination of the relationship between the infant mortality of US birth cohorts and their mortality in later life suggested that infant mortality from diarrhoea and enteritis was particularly influential. In the 1917-21 birth cohorts of 17 US Registration States, infant mortality from diarrhoea and enteritis was significantly related to arteriosclerosis heart disease at ages 40-44 and 50-54 in both sexes, and to respiratory cancer …
