Galtonian Regression, Company Age and Job Generation 1986–95
We study the growth of employment at the company level using a very large database of company accounts. More than 31 000 independent companies were studied over 1986–95, though we concentrate on the 8 103 companies which survived throughout the period. We find that smaller companies grew relatively to larger ones in each of the cyclical phases studied, 1986–89, 1989–92 and 1993–95. But their advantage diminished steadily. Despite the negative eff…
The Inequality of Incomes in the UK: An essay in memory of Professor Sir Henry Phelps Brown
Using Henry Phelps Brown's distinction between discrimination before and within the labour market, this paper first reviews the inequality of achievements and incomes of an imaginary cohort of people passing through the life cycle of birth, infancy, schooling, further education and into the labour market. At each stage appropriate policies for reducing inequality by “levelling up"” are examined. Secondly, it summarises the unprecedented increase …
Growth and Size of Firms
We use a dataset of 87,000 independent UK companies to investigate the relationship between firm size and growth. For the sample as a whole, a Galton-Markov model of regression towards the mean shows that growth is negatively related to initial size. However, when the sample is broken down by size group, we find that regression towards the mean only occurs for the smallest firms, e.g. those with eight employees or less. For larger firms, there is…

Population densities and optimal aircraft flight paths
Hart P. E. (1973) Population densities and optimal aircraft flight paths, Reg. Studies 7, 137–151. The official policy of concentrating aircraft flight paths in Minimum Noise Routes is based on the famous Noise and Number Index (NNI) estimated from statistical surveys. This and similar measures of environmental quality are based on ordinal measures of disutility which are determinate only up to a monotonic transformation. Ordinal measures of disu…

Nearest neighbor pattern classification
The nearest neighbor decision rule assigns to an unclassified sample point the classification of the nearest of a set of previously classified points. This rule is independent of the underlying joint distribution on the sample points and their classifications, and hence the probability of errorRof such a rule must be at least as great as the Bayes probability of errorR^{\ast}--the minimum probability of error over all decision rules taking underl…
