  • The impact of adolescent physical activity on quality of life

Open Access•Sen Ma, Yan Gao et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Background Quality of Life (QoL) is a crucial multi-dimensional structure in the development process of adolescents. As a key topic in adolescent research, existing achievements all indicate that participating in physical activities can improve the QoL of adolescents. However, the underlying mechanisms—the mediating role of anxiety and the underlying gender differences—remain insufficiently understood. Purpose This study investigates the mechanis…

  • Cultural Ties, FDI and Firm Performance

    Open Access•Sen Ma•ARTICLE•World Economy•2025

We explore how cultural ties, measured by common language use, affect the quantity and performance of foreign investments originating in culturally related regions. To identify a causal relationship, we employ discontinuous increases in investments from Hong Kong and Macau in Mainland China at the geographic border of the Cantonese linguistic dialect zone. We find that the employment share of Hong Kong and Macau firms in all firms just inside a M…

  • Deterrent effects of targeted sanctions by mainland China on Taiwan

Open Access•Fengze Han, Runliang Li et al.•ARTICLE•Economica•2025•References: 41

We investigate the deterrent effects of a firm‐targeted sanction and a politician‐targeted sanction deployed by mainland China against Taiwan to deter support for ‘Taiwan independence’. In the short run, we find that the signal sent by the targeted sanctions generated deterrence to firms that were not directly sanctioned, but were politically inclined towards ‘Taiwan independence’. Specifically, we find that those firms that donated more to the p…

  • Identification of biological indicators for human exposure toxicology in smart cities based on public health data and deep learning

Open Access•Peimao Gao, Guowu Huang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

With the acceleration of urbanization, the risk of urban population exposure to environmental pollutants is increasing. Protecting public health is the top priority in the construction of smart cities. The purpose of this study is to propose a method for identifying toxicological biological indicators of human exposure in smart cities based on public health data and deep learning to achieve accurate assessment and management of exposure risks. In…

  • Study on the Influence of Opposing Glare from Vehicle High-Beam Headlights Based on Drivers’ Visual Requirements

Open Access•Jiangbi Hu, Yunpeng Guo et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

The anti-glare facilities in median strips are designed to block opposing headlights in order to avoid disability glare, but a large amount of headlight leakage results in uncomfortable glare, to the point that drivers can barely detect dangerous obstacles or road conditions. This paper aims to explore the glare range under high-beam headlights on drivers' visual requirements. Based on an analysis of the mechanism of headlight glare, this paper p…

  • Who Coresides With Parents? An Analysis Based on Sibling Comparative Advantage

    Open Access•Sen Ma, Fangqi Wen•ARTICLE•Demography•2016•Cited by: 11•References: 45

Coresidence between elderly parents and their married adult children is common in East Asian societies. We analyze theoretically and empirically with which adult child parents coreside when the extended family has multiple adult children, and we show that this decision-making process can be rationalized. Specifically, we find evidence that suggests division of labor among family members through the choice of coresidence. Theoretically, we show th…
