  • Impressions for a lifetime

Open Access•Jacopo Mazza, Mariapia Mendola et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Demographic Economics•2026

We examine the impact of exposure to immigrants during formative years on attitudes toward immigration later on in life. Our research design combines granular administrative data on immigrant shares in Germany with longitudinal individual-level data on immigration sentiment. Using panel fixed-effect estimates, identification leverages both spatial variation at critical ages and time variation induced by birth cohorts. We find that individuals exp…

  • Agricultural Transformation and Farmers' Expectations

Jacopo Bonan, Harounan Kazianga et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2025

This paper uses the randomized rollout of a national agricultural extension program in Uganda to study subsistence smallholders' decisions to adopt cash oilseed crops and shift to commercial farming. By eliciting yield and price expectations, we examine how beliefs evolve after the intervention and influence adoption decisions. Our findings indicate that technical and market information significantly raises farmers' expectations, leading to an av…

Using census data for 1996, 2001 and 2007, we study the labor market effect of immigration to South Africa. We exploit the variation-both at the district and at the national level-in the share of foreign-born male workers across schooling and experience groups over time. In addition, we use an instrumental variable empirical strategy to estimate the causal effect of immigration on the local labor market. At the district level, we show that increa…

  • Formation of Migrant Networks

Open Access•Margherita Comola, Mariapia Mendola•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Journal of Economics•2014

In this paper, we provide the first direct evidence on the internal structure of the migrant social network. By using a purposely designed survey on Sri Lankan immigrants living in Milan, we show that the pattern of within‐group link formation is heterogeneous across immigrants, and differentiated according to the network function (i.e., accommodation, credit, job‐finding). We find that migrants tend to interact with co‐nationals who come from ne…

  • Labour Migration and Social Networks Participation in Southern Mozambique

    Open Access•Juan M Gallego, Mariapia Mendola•ARTICLE•Economica•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 68

This paper investigates how social networks in poor developing settings are affected by migration. Using a unique household survey from southern Mozambique, we test the role of labour mobility in shaping participation in groups and interhousehold cooperation by migrant‐sending households in village economies at origin. We find that migration cum remittances boosts household engagement in community‐based social networks. Our findings are robust to…

  • South-South Migration and the Labor Market

Giovanni Facchini, Anna Maria Mayda et al.•BOOK•2011

Using census data for 1996, 2001 and 2007 the authors study the labor market effect of immigration in South Africa. In this period the share of foreign born over the total population has grown by almost fifty percent, and both the characteristics and geographical distribution of immigrants show substantial variation over time. The author exploit these features of the data to carry out an analysis that combines both the 'spatial correlation' appro…

  • Catastrophic and impoverishing effects of health expenditure

    Open Access•C Bredenkamp, C L Bredenkamp et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•2011•Cited by: 6•References: 6

This paper investigates the effect of health-related expenditure on household welfare in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and Kosovo, all of which have undertaken major health sector reform. Two methodologies are used: (i) the incidence and intensity of 'catastrophic' health care expenditure, and (ii) the effect of out-of-pocket payments on poverty headcount and poverty gap measures. Data are drawn from the most recent Living S…

The Policy Research Working Paper Series disseminates the findings of work in progress to encourage the exchange of ideas about development issues. An objective of the series is to get the findings out quickly, even if the presentations are less than fully polished. The papers carry the names of the authors and should be cited accordingly. The findings, interpretations, and conclusions expressed in this paper are entirely those of the authors. Th…
