  • Gender differences in household education expenditure in Malaysia

Open Access•Sarimah Surianshah, SARAH BRIDGES•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2026

Purpose The objective of this study is to examine gender differences in the allocation of household expenditure on education in Malaysia. Design/methodology/approach This study examines the determinants of expenditure on education using a double hurdle model, where the decision to incur education expenditure is modelled first and followed by the decision on how much to spend on education. Findings The results show evidence of significant gender d…

  • Talking Trials

    Open Access•SARAH BRIDGES, Catherine Lamont‐Robinson et al.•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2023

INTRODUCTION: Clinical trials must include diverse participants to ensure the wide applicability of results. However, people from ethnic minorities are included in clinical trials at rates lower than expected given their share of the population. Working with South Riverside Community Development Centre (SRCDC), Talking Trials used public engagement to foster discussions around the underrepresentation of those from minority ethnic communities in c…

  • The impact of child migration on the health and well‐being of parents left behind

    Open Access•SARAH BRIDGES, Lefan Liu•ARTICLE•Journal of International…•2022

This paper uses data from the China Health and Retirement Survey to estimate the causal effect child out‐migration has on the health of parents in China. For rural parents, we show that after controlling for self‐selection, child out‐migration has a detrimental effect not only on subjective well‐being and mental health but also on cognitive function and physical health when measured using a series of clinical tests and health biomarkers. In contr…

  • Early Childhood Health During Conflict

Open Access•SARAH BRIDGES, Douglas Scott•ARTICLE•Oxford Bulletin of Economics and…•2022

This paper finds evidence of severe health deficits among young children who were exposed to the Lord’s Resistance Army insurgency in Northern Uganda (1987–2007). We employ a difference‐in‐differences approach to estimate a 0.74 standard deviation deficit in height‐for‐age z‐scores among children exposed to the fighting for a period of more than 9 months. Extending our analysis, we use a mediation model to investigate the transmission mechanisms …

  • Creativity as a Racializing and Ableizing Scientific Object

Open Access•Ryan Ziols, Natalie R Davis et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Research in Education•2022

In this review of literature, we attend to some of the ways that well-intentioned hopes for fostering creativity and encouraging greater inclusion may also rely on problematic premises that work to reify exclusionary logics and practices. More specifically, we historicize and critically examine how creativity studies—often despite explicit efforts to broaden notions of creativity, include marginalized populations, and democratize education—have d…

  • Disability in Uganda

Aisha Abubakar, SARAH BRIDGES et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Development Studies•2021

Using data from an orthotic intervention in Kampala, Uganda, this paper estimates the health and economic impacts of providing orthotic equipment to adults with lower limb disabilities. We examine changes to: (i) functional mobility and (ii) labour market outcomes, including type of employment and monthly earnings. One year after the intervention, the effects are noticeably gendered; men exhibit an improvement in their level of functional mobilit…

  • Sexual Orientation, Legal Partnerships and Wages in Britain

Open Access•Sarah Bridge, SARAH BRIDGES et al.•ARTICLE•Work Employment and Society•2019•Cited by: 12•References: 32

This article uses data from the Labour Force Survey to examine the effect sexual orientation has on wages in Britain. In doing so it provides the first empirical investigation of the effect being in a same-sex legal partnership has on wages. The results show that gay cohabitees and lesbians face a wage premium compared to their heterosexual counterparts. Decomposition results show that for gay cohabitees this arises due to differences in observab…

  • Should They Stay or Should They Go? Attitudes Towards Immigration in Europe

    Open Access•SARAH BRIDGES, Simona Mateut•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•2014•Cited by: 16•References: 10

This paper examines the main determinants of individual attitudes towards immigration in E urope. Our results suggest that both economic and non‐economic variables shape attitudes towards immigration, but the relative importance of these factors depends crucially on the race/ethnicity of the arriving immigrants. While fears over labour market competition are more likely to shape attitudes towards the arrival of same race immigrants, more exposure…

  • Slipping through the cracks’

    Open Access•Janet W Mcgrath, David Kaawa‐mafigiri et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2012

Public health initiatives to 'test and treat' HIV-infected persons require understanding HIV care seeking. A study of 101 HIV-infected women receiving anti-retroviral medications in Kampala, Uganda, examined barriers to HIV care. Participants entered HIV/AIDS care late, despite knowing their risk and having sought care for symptoms. Over half of the participants (51%) reported delays of up to 5 years from when they suspected they were infected to…

  • House Price Shocks and Household Indebtedness in the United Kingdom

Open Access•Richard Disney, SARAH BRIDGES et al.•ARTICLE•Economica•2010•Cited by: 2•References: 20

We use household panel data to explore the link between changes in house prices and household indebtedness (both secured on housing assets and unsecured) in the United Kingdom. We show that households which are borrowing‐constrained by a lack of housing equity as collateral make greater use of unsecured debt such as credit cards or personal loans. In response to rising house prices, which relax this constraint, such households are more likely to …

  • Financial Constraints, Global Engagement, and Firm Survival in the United Kingdom

    Open Access•SARAH BRIDGES, Alessandra Guariglia•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•2008•Cited by: 6•References: 5

Financial constraints have been found to play an important role on various aspects of firm behavior. Yet, their effects on firm survival have been largely neglected. We use a panel of 61,496 UK firms over the period 1997–2002 to study the effects of financial variables on firms' failure probabilities, differentiating firms into globally engaged and purely domestic. Estimating a wide range of specifications, we find that lower collateral and highe…
