Monopoly, Inequality, and the Economy
The USMCA Review and the Mexican Economy
In the last decade of the twentieth century, the vast majority of economies moved toward opening their markets for goods and services, as well as capital. This opening—together with the curtailment of state intervention in the economic sphere and the prioritization in macroeconomic policy of fiscal prudence and low inflation—were hallmark features of the shift in the prevailing economic paradigm (Williamson 1990; Sachs et al. 2018). The drive tow…
Feminist Perspectives on Care and Macroeconomic Modeling
Macroeconomic models and associated policy analyses have long focused exclusively on market production, ignoring gender and care. Decades of feminist economic research, policy analysis, and activism around gender, care, and unpaid work have provided strong intellectual foundations for redressing this lacuna. This special issue represents the collaborative theoretical modeling work of a multidisciplinary group formed to respond to that gap. This i…
The Rebranded Nafta
The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (usmca) was the product of a renegotiation of the former North American Free Trade Agreement (nafta) that was intended by the Trump administration to “put America first.” This article analyzes the most important new provisions in the usmca that that administration believed would inhibit foreign investment in Mexico and reverse the offshoring of U.S. jobs. Some of the new provisions represent improvements …

Economic stagnation in the United States
This paper analyzes the causes of the slow recovery of the US economy since the financial crisis and Great Recession of 2008-9. Fallen house values and excessive household debts continue to depress consumer spending, while corporations are failing to invest in spite of record profits. The increasingly unequal distribution of income limits demand, while long-term structural transformations continue to erode employment creation. An expansionary mon…

Developing Country Exports of Manufactures
This paper tests for a ‘fallacy of composition’ by analysing the demand for exports of the 18 developing countries that are most specialised in manufactures in the markets of the 10 largest industrial countries. Estimated export equations (both time-series and panel data) suggest that most developing countries compete with other developing country exporters rather than with industrialised country producers. A smaller number of countries that expo…

The ‘Unnatural and Retrograde Order’
This paper extends some new interpretations of Adam Smith’s theory of trade by reconciling what have previously been regarded as his three separate theories of absolute advantage, market‐widening and vent‐for‐surplus. However, this reconstruction of Smith’s trade theory is shown to be inconsistent with his theory of the natural stages of economic development in Book III of the Wealth of Nations . Rather, the interpretation of Smith’s trade theory…
