Combating trade‐related fraud
We evaluate the efficacy of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Recommendations 2012, which set the global standard on combating money laundering and terrorist financing, by exploiting its staggered adoption in 16 East and South African countries. Using the trade gap as a proxy for trade‐related fraud activities, such as trade‐based money laundering, we find that the adoption of the FATF recommendations is correlated with a 15.3% reduction in …
Constructing a county-level environmental events dataset for China during the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368–1911)
This article builds on China’s rich recorded history to present a newly constructed dataset of environmental events at the county-level for the period 1368 to 1911. Essential to the dataset construction is the use of recently developed AI techniques, including new optical character recognition, lexical analysis based on machine learning, and word frequency analysis. The result is that environmental information was extracted from different sources…
Beyond Experience and Capital. Is there a Return to Return Migration
This paper explores the effect of return migration on the performance of Egyptian household firms. The length of the migration spell and the experience and capital accumulated overseas may influence the ability of return migrants to establish and successfully manage their firms. We expand this literature by examining the impact of return m…

A Storm in a Teacup? Hurricanes and Sugar Prices in the First Half of the Nineteenth Century
This paper investigates the impact of hurricanes in the Caribbean on sugar prices in Britain between 1815 and 1841. The authors expect the news of hurricanes arriving at British harbors to drive up sugar prices mainly because the market anticipated that the supply of sugar from the Caribbean colonies would drop dramatically in the near future. The econometric results suggest a significant rise in prices due to hurricanes. Moreover this study find…
Melting ice, growing trade
Large reductions in Arctic sea ice, most notably in summer, coupled with growing interest in Arctic shipping and resource exploitation have renewed interest in the economic potential of the Northern Sea Route (NSR). Two key constraints on the future viability of the NSR pertain to bathymetry and the future evolution of the sea ice cover. Climate model projections of future sea ice conditions throughout the rest of the century suggest that even un…
Chapitre 7.
