  • Maternal Undernutrition in Adolescence and Child Human Capital Development Over the Life Course

Open Access•Andreas Georgiadis, Liza Benny et al.•ARTICLE•Economica•2021•References: 36

Adolescence has been highlighted as a period when environments are critical for the human capital development of women, and thus of their children, but evidence on this from low‐ and middle‐income countries is scarce. We estimate the effect of mother’s adolescent undernutrition on offspring growth and development from infancy through adolescence using data from an international cohort study in Ethiopia, India, Peru and Vietnam, and instrumental v…

  • Children, Poverty and the Sustainable Development Goals

    Open Access•Paul Dornan•ARTICLE•Children & Society•2017

The Sustainable Development Goals ( SDG s) came into force in January 2016, taking over from the Millennium Development Goals ( MDG s). Significant human development progress has occurred in recent decades. Nevertheless, the MDG s have been criticised not least for failing to prioritise inequality and gains for the poorest people. The SDG s create a much more comprehensive agenda and support many key child rights concerns. While SDG s reflect an …

  • Localising the campaign against child poverty

Paul Dornan•ARTICLE•Journal of Poverty and Social…•2008

Recent changes in the governance regime for English local authorities mean that they can choose tackling child poverty as a key indicator of their success. One in three has done so, with others having chosen related indicators. Although many of the levers required to meet the national objective of eradicating child poverty lie at the UK level, local authorities have a key role in helping to ensure that services are effective in targeting poverty.…

  • Delivering on the pledge to eradicate child poverty

Paul Dornan•ARTICLE•Journal of Poverty and Social…•2005

Of New Labour’s policy agenda, that relating to child poverty is among the most impressive. Here the government recognised a social ill, set out to tackle it and delivered real gains. Yet after that effort we have, on latest available evidence, a child income poverty rate of 28%, double the rate of 1979 (National Statistics, 2005). The timeline of New Labour’s policy on child poverty is divided by a speech given by Tony Blair on 18 March, 1999, w…

  • Underwriting citizenship for older people

Gary Craig, Paul Dornan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Poverty and Social…•2003

This article reports the key findings of the qualitative element of a study, undertaken by the Universities of Hull and York, which explored the impact of additional benefit income, particularly of Attendance Allowance (AA) and Minimum Income Guarantee (MIG), for older people. The study was part of a wide-ranging examination of the issue of pensioner poverty undertaken by the National Audit Office (NAO, 2002) and a full report of the findings of …

  • Welfare Governance in the Surveillance Society

Open Access•Paul Dornan, Jonell Hudson et al.•ARTICLE•Social Policy and Administration•2003•Cited by: 4•References: 6

In exploring the implications of information and communication technologies (ICTs), Fitzpatrick has suggested the need for a new category of rights—virtual rights. To explore this claim, we consider how developments in information management and processing differentially impact on citizens. Using examples from the public and private sectors we explore the dangers posed by the emergent surveillance society and agree these may require new rights. B…
